A one-user license for Dragon Professional version 16 was listed at $685.99 by CDW, a US reseller, when we checked on October 16, 2026 1. The cloud version, Dragon Professional Anywhere, is sold as a subscription. One seller lists it at $660 per year 2, and another at $480 per year 3. Nuance's Windows product page offers a Contact us link and no price 4, so the current prices here come from resellers and can change.
The answer depends on three things: which product you need, how many years you will use it, and which seller you buy from.
The desktop license is one payment for one user
The desktop license is listed per user. The CDW listing reads "Dragon Professional (v. 16) - license - 1 user" at $685.99 1. That listing is for version 16. Nuance's release notes now cover version 16.1, and they say Dragon upgrades versions 14, 15 and 16 to 16.1 automatically 5. If you already own one of those versions, ask the seller whether your copy qualifies before you buy a full license. We could not find a current upgrade price for version 16, so the seller is the only source for it.
A license is one payment for the version you buy. For what that term means, see perpetual license.
The cloud subscription costs less in year one from one seller and about the same from another
Both sellers below list Dragon Professional Anywhere on a one-year term. The desktop license is the reference point.
| Option | List price | Seller |
|---|---|---|
| Version 16 license, one user | $685.99 in one payment 1 | CDW |
| Professional Anywhere, annual | $660 per year 2 | StartStop |
| Professional Anywhere, annual | $480 per year 3 | Milner |
| Professional Anywhere, monthly | $55 per month 6 | StartStop |
At StartStop's annual price, one year of the subscription costs about the same as the license. The license is about 1.04 times the subscription price 7. At Milner's annual price, the first year of the subscription costs less than the license 3. The two annual prices differ for the same product on the same one-year term, so the seller you choose matters as much as the choice between license and subscription.
It depends on how many years you will use Dragon
If you need Dragon for one year, compare the first-year price of each option. Milner's annual price is the lowest annual figure in our sources. If you expect to use it for longer, add up the subscription payments for the years you will stay, and compare the total with the license. A subscription keeps charging while you stay on it. A license does not repeat the charge, but it covers only the version you bought.
Check what each quote includes before you compare the totals. The sources we could open do not say whether a quote includes sales tax, shipping, support or future updates, so ask each seller in writing.
Older prices show how far the cost has moved
Dragon's price has moved a lot since launch. Dragon NaturallySpeaking cost $695 at its 1997 launch, and its price later fell to $349 8. The 1997 figures are launch and later prices for a different product, so they show the trend only, and they are not adjusted for inflation.
What to do before you pay
- Confirm the edition. Dragon Home is no longer sold 9, and Nuance's store menu lists neither Home nor Premium 10, so a cheap listing for either is for a discontinued product. The comparison of Home and Professional explains the difference.
- Confirm the license count. A "1 user" license covers one person. Compare prices only for the same edition, license count and currency.
- Ask for the price in writing, including what it includes and whether it is for version 16 or 16.1.
- Check the operating system. Check your PC against the operating systems that Nuance's release notes list before you buy.
- Look at the free options. If you need dictation for light use, start with what your computer already has. Is Dragon NaturallySpeaking free? covers what the free tools can and cannot do.
Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows. It is a different product from Dragon, and it works differently. See our plans for its current prices.
