The free plans match on words, and Willow keeps less by default
The free plans show the same 2,000-word weekly figure. Willow's help center lists a word limit of 2,000 per week on its free plan 3, and Wispr Flow's free plan allows 2,000 dictated words per week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile 4. Willow also limits each free dictation to 5 minutes 19. Willow's pricing page describes its free model as unlimited but weaker 20, so check the current limits on both pages before you choose on that basis. See Is Willow Voice free? and Is Wispr Flow free?.
On privacy, the difference is the default. Willow starts with Privacy Mode on, and in that mode it does not retain dictated audio, dictated text or screen content 17. Wispr Flow's two data switches, for improving the model and for cloud storage of dictations, default to on unless restricted 18. You can turn them off in Wispr's settings, so the gap depends on what you change. Details: Is Willow Voice safe? and Is Wispr Flow safe?.
Wispr Flow has more App Store ratings and covers Android
On the US App Store, Wispr Flow had 18,110 iPhone ratings against Willow's 1,073 on October 26, 2026 21 22. Average ratings were 4.85 and 4.60 23 24. Those are iPhone numbers only, from users who chose to rate. Wispr Flow has also announced a $280 million Series B 25, which signals resources but says nothing about quality.
The practical gap is Android. Wispr Flow lists it 14; Willow shows it as coming soon 26. See Is Willow Voice available for Windows?.
Superwhisper and Aqua Voice are the other names people compare
- Superwhisper runs natively on Windows 10 and 11 27. On its Free plan, dictation uses local Whisper models, and the company says nothing dictated leaves the device 28. Choose it if local processing matters more than AI cleanup. See Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper and our Superwhisper guide.
- Aqua Voice is cheaper on Pro at $12 a month billed monthly 29, but its desktop app has no offline mode 30. See Aqua Voice vs Wispr Flow.
It depends on three things
- Your phone. Android means Wispr Flow or Aqua Voice 14 31. Willow has no Android app yet 26. All three are on iPhone 13 14 31.
- Your privacy default. Willow does not retain dictated audio, text or screen content in Private Mode, which is the default 17. Wispr Flow's data switches default to on unless restricted 18, so you need to turn them off yourself.
- How much you dictate for free. Wispr Flow's free plan stops at 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile 4. Willow's help center gives the same 2,000 words a week on its free plan 3, so the free tiers are close. If you need more, compare the paid plans.
What to do
Install both free plans and dictate the same real email in each for a week. Neither commits you, and your own accent, microphone and vocabulary matter more than any review. Yap, which we make, is a dictation app too, so judge this page by its dated, cited facts. If neither cloud tool fits, see our guide to the best dictation software, the Wispr Flow guide, and the Willow Voice guide in our overview of dictation software. The glossary explains cloud dictation and push-to-talk.
