Can MacWhisper record and transcribe meetings?

Yes, MacWhisper records and transcribes meetings on your Mac. The maker's website says it transcribes Zoom, Teams, Webex, Skype and Discord calls in the background ¹. On macOS, capturing other apps' audio goes through the Screen Recording permission, covered below ². Two cautions: the maker's help center labels automatic meeting recording a beta ³, and recording system audio is a Pro feature ⁴. Our MacWhisper guide covers the rest of the app.

It detects 15 meeting apps and offers to record

MacWhisper's help center lists 15 apps whose meetings it detects automatically, including Zoom, Teams, Webex, Slack and WhatsApp, and several browsers, which is how web meetings such as Google Meet are covered. FaceTime is excluded because of macOS privacy restrictions ⁵. When a meeting starts, a notification appears and you click Record. You can then stop the recording from the main window and transcribe it from the history sidebar.

Setup:

1. Open Settings, then Record Meetings.
2. Turn on Automatic Meeting Notifications.
3. Allow Screen Recording and Microphone access when macOS asks ².
4. Check the app you use is in the observed applications list.

Automatic detection and dictation work only in the direct-download version, not in the Mac App Store edition, Whisper Transcription ⁶.

Recording system audio needs Pro, and the feature is beta

The feature list on the maker's store page puts recording and transcribing system audio, for example to record meetings, on the Pro side ⁴. Pro also includes real-time meeting transcription with speaker recognition, limited to WhisperKit and Parakeet models ⁷. Pro is a one-time payment, listed at €64 on the maker's website ⁸ and at €65 on its Gumroad page ⁹, so check the current price before you buy. See whether MacWhisper is free.

The help center says automatic meeting recording may have occasional issues or data loss ³, so record important meetings by hand as well. If a meeting is not detected, restart MacWhisper and the meeting app. You can also start a recording by hand from the MacWhisper menu ¹⁰.

Speaker labels depend on the model

A meeting transcript is most useful when it says who spoke. Pro offers automatic speaker recognition with local models on M-series Macs, with ElevenLabs and Deepgram, and with NVIDIA's Nemotron 3 Diarization ¹¹. For the transcription itself, noise is the hard case: a 1996 study found that the performance of a speech recognition system degrades rapidly in the presence of ambient noise ¹². See which model is best for how the models compare.

It depends: privacy, consent and other options

Privacy. The privacy policy says no audio, text or other data leaves your device ¹³. The same policy says the app can send anonymous analytics events about licensing status ¹⁴. Cloud transcription is a different case, because it sends your audio to the provider you choose.

Consent. Recording a call can be illegal without permission. California's Penal Code 632, for example, punishes intentionally recording a confidential communication without the consent of all parties ¹⁵. Rules differ by place: see one-party consent and all-party consent. Tell people the meeting is being recorded.

Other tools. Zoom can transcribe cloud recordings on Pro, Business, Education and Enterprise accounts with cloud recording enabled ¹⁶, and Google Meet transcription is available on some Google Workspace editions ¹⁷. 1. Try a short test call first, with the permissions granted.
2. For important meetings, use manual recording as well as automatic detection.
3. Transcribe afterward with a speaker-capable model, then fix labels by hand.
4. Get consent before you record.
