Question · Dictation software
What is the difference between Wispr Flow and Superwhisper?
Wispr Flow is a cloud service that automatically removes filler words and formats your text, sold as a per-user monthly subscription. Superwhisper lets you choose per mode: its free plan uses local Whisper models with no AI processing, its Voice to Text mode outputs raw text, and its Pro plan adds cloud models.

The main difference is a default. Wispr Flow is a cloud app that cleans up your speech as part of dictation. Superwhisper lets you choose, mode by mode, whether your audio stays on the device and whether a language model edits the text. Both turn speech into text in the app you are using, and both sell paid plans, so the choice depends on where you want audio processed and how much editing you want done for you. The full comparison of AI dictation apps is in our guide.
The two apps differ most on where audio is processed and what gets edited
| Question | Wispr Flow | Superwhisper |
|---|---|---|
| Where is audio processed? | In the cloud. Audio is deleted after transcription unless cloud storage is on 1 | Free plan: local Whisper models, with no AI processing 2 |
| Does it edit your words with AI? | Yes, by design. It removes filler words, adds punctuation and formats the text 3 | Optional, per mode. Voice to Text outputs raw text with no language model 4 |
| Which devices? | Mac, Windows, iOS and Android 5 | One Pro license covers unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus an iPhone and an Android phone 6 |
| What does it cost? | $15 per user per month 7 | $8.49 per month on the monthly plan 8 |

Privacy is the difference that matters most for sensitive text
Wispr Flow is a cloud app. Its privacy page says audio is deleted once it is transcribed, unless you turn on cloud storage. Check that page's training setting before you dictate anything sensitive, because it governs whether the company can use your audio and edits to improve its models.
Superwhisper's free plan keeps dictation on the device. Its documentation says that on the free plan, dictation uses local Whisper models without AI processing, and that nothing dictated leaves the device 2. Superwhisper's paid Pro plan adds cloud models and AI processing 9. With cloud transcription, audio goes to Superwhisper's proxy to be transcribed 10, so the setting you pick for each mode decides where your words go. Check the mode you are using every time, not only the plan.
Cleanup is on by default in one app and a choice in the other
Wispr Flow describes its cleanup as part of the product. Its home page says it "automatically removes filler words, adds punctuation, and formats your writing" 3, and you get that behavior when you dictate.
Superwhisper treats cleanup as a choice. Its documentation describes a second, optional stage in which a language model refines or reformats the text according to the mode, and a Voice to Text mode that skips the stage 4. If you want the words you said, you can get them with no model in the way. If you want a rewrite, you pick a mode that does one.
A cleanup step can change a word as easily as it removes a filler, so check names and figures in either app. The same caution applies to both.
Price: a monthly plan on each side, with different units
Wispr Flow's Pro plan is priced per user, so the monthly figure multiplies with each seat. Superwhisper's monthly plan is lower per month, and it also sells a one-time lifetime license 11. For that license's price and how it compares with the monthly plan, see our Superwhisper and Apple Dictation answer.
Each free tier is also different. Superwhisper's free plan runs on your device with no AI processing. Wispr Flow's free plan is capped by words, so test it against your real week of dictation before you decide.
It depends on what you dictate and where it can go
- Choose Wispr Flow if you want cleanup on every device without setting modes, you accept cloud processing, and you dictate enough to justify a monthly fee per seat.
- Choose Superwhisper if you want local processing, raw text, or control over which model and mode you use.
- Consider neither if your built-in dictation already gives you clean enough text. The free dictation software guide covers that option.
What to do: run both free tiers on the same paragraph
- Install the free tier of each app and dictate the same 150-word paragraph into each, with the same microphone and in the same room.
- For Superwhisper, dictate once in Voice to Text and once in a cleanup mode, so you can see the difference the model makes.
- Compare the drafts for filler words removed, punctuation added, and every word whose meaning changed, especially names and figures.
- Check each app's privacy setting against where your audio can go, and record it.
