Question · Dictation software
What is the most accurate dictation software?
No dictation software has been shown to be the most accurate for everyone. Strong recognizers make few errors on clean, read speech, but error rates rise sharply with a distant microphone, background noise and some speakers, and the independent comparisons we found do not rank consumer apps. Test the candidates on your own voice, microphone and writing, then compare their error rates.

No single dictation app is the most accurate for everyone, and we found no independent study that ranks consumer dictation apps on the same audio. Accuracy depends on the recognizer, the microphone, the room and the speaker, and those can change the error rate a great deal. The most accurate software is the one with the fewest errors in your own writing, and only a test on that writing can show which one it is. The best dictation software guide sets out the apps and the test in full, and the dictation software overview covers the basics.
Published benchmark scores use test audio that may not match your writing
Benchmarks measure accuracy on fixed sets of recordings. The Open ASR Leaderboard compares 86 open-source and proprietary speech recognition systems across 12 datasets 1. Its scores are useful for comparing models, but they are calculated on normalized text. Before scoring, punctuation and casing are removed, along with fillers such as "um" and "uh" 2. A dictation user sees exactly those things on the screen, so a leaderboard position does not show how the text will look in your document.
Microphone distance and background noise can change results a great deal
The clearest effect in the research is the microphone. In a study, read sentences recorded in a studio had a word error rate of 3.7% with deep neural network models 3. Real recordings made with a single distant ceiling microphone in an apartment had a word error rate of 12.0%, though the speech and rooms differed from the studio test 4. That gap is large enough that the microphone deserves attention before you compare software.
Noise also raises the error rate for a strong model, Whisper Large V2. On the LibriSpeech Clean test set it had a word error rate of 2.7% 5. On CHiME6, a different test set, the same model had a word error rate of 25.5% 6. So the answer to "how good is voice recognition software" depends on the conditions. On clean, read English the model is very accurate, and on CHiME6 it is far less accurate.
Head-to-head results can be too close to call
Careful comparisons often find no clear winner. In a 2025 pilot of neurosurgery dictation, the difference in mean word error rate between Dragon Medical One and a Whisper-based model was not statistically significant (p = 0.080) 7. That is a small pilot in one specialty, not a verdict on consumer apps. It shows the pattern to expect: a ranking can change with the audio, the speaker and the scoring rule.
Accuracy also varies by speaker. Across five commercial speech recognition systems, the average word error rate was 0.35 for Black speakers and 0.19 for white speakers 8. A system can serve different speakers unevenly, so a vendor's average does not predict how it will treat your voice. Children's speech is another case that these studies do not test, so see the dictation app for kids question before you judge a tool with a child's speech.
It depends on what the errors cost you
Accuracy matters differently for each use. A writer drafting an essay can fix a few errors in a pass. A professional dictating names, figures or medical terms needs those terms checked separately, because a low overall word error rate can hide errors in exactly the words that matter. The writers question covers the drafting case, and the how to test question covers the check you can run in an afternoon.
What to do: score error rates on your own passages
- Pick three passages of about 300 words from work you actually produce, and keep the original text as your reference.
- Dictate each passage in every app you are comparing, with the same microphone, in the same room.
- Count the errors against the reference, then divide by the number of words in the reference. That gives the word error rate for each passage and app.
- Score punctuation separately if it matters to you, since leaderboards strip it out.
- Choose the app with the lowest rate that also needs the least correction time. If the built-in tool is close, keep it.
Repeat the test after a week, because your speech and your microphone setup may change how well each app works.
