Question · Dictation software
What is the best dictation app for kids?
We found no independent test that ranks dictation apps for children. Start with the dictation built into a device an adult manages, test it with the child's own voice, and read the privacy terms before a child under 13 uses any app that records speech. Recognition accuracy depends on the speaker, so an adult should proofread what the child dictates.

We found no independent test that compares dictation apps on children's voices, so there is no verified best app for kids. The honest answer is a method. Choose the tool using the child's own speech, on a device an adult supervises, and only after you have read its privacy terms. The steps below set that out. They also show why a result for one child may not carry over to another. The best dictation software guide covers the apps for adults in full, and the dictation software overview covers the basics.
Accuracy varies by speaker, so test the child's own voice
The Kid-Whisper study reduced the word error rate of Whisper-Small on the MyST children's test set from 13.93% to 9.11% 1. That is one model on one test set, so a demo recorded by an adult says little about your child's speech.
Age and word count affect accuracy most, so one child's result does not transfer
A 2025 study of speech recognition on children's speech found that a child's age and the number of words in the audio had the highest impact on accuracy, followed by background noise and pronunciation ability 2. Two practical points follow. Test each child you care about, not a typical child. And use the same passage length in every test, because the number of words affects accuracy.
Privacy rules for children under 13 are the first check
In the United States, the children's privacy rule known as COPPA requires operators of covered services to give parents direct notice and to obtain verifiable parental consent before they collect, use or disclose personal information from children under 13 3.
The 2025 amendments also add biometric identifiers to the definition of personal information. That covers identifiers that can be used for the automated or semi-automated recognition of an individual 4. Whether a particular dictation app is covered, and whether its voice data counts, depends on the service. That is a question for the vendor's privacy policy and, where it matters, a lawyer, not a product page.
Where the audio is processed depends on the device
On a Mac, Apple says that voice inputs and transcripts for general text Dictation are processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers 5. On Windows the picture is different. Microsoft says voice typing needs an internet connection, a working microphone and the cursor in a text box 6, so a child using it on Windows depends on a connection. Check the setting on the child's device before you assume where the speech goes.
The studies we found are about high school students, not young children
In a study of high school students with and without learning disabilities, total word errors with speech recognition were under 10% 7. For students with learning disabilities, essays dictated to speech recognition were better than handwritten ones 8. Those results come from high school students, so they do not describe a primary school child. For a child with a learning disability, the accessibility guide explains the options, and a teacher or disability office can say which accommodations apply.
What to do: start on the built-in tool, test, supervise, then decide
- Start with the built-in dictation on the device the child uses, if an adult manages the account and turns the feature on.
- Test with the child's own sentences. Have the child read three short passages of about 50 words each, then count the errors using the method in how to test dictation software.
- Read the privacy terms before a child under 13 uses any app that records speech. Look for what is kept, for how long, and whether a parent can consent and ask for deletion.
- Keep an adult in the loop. Proofread every dictated text before it is shared or submitted. The question on proofreading dictated text sets out the steps.
- Practice in short sessions. The question on practicing dictation covers how to build the habit.
If the child says many "um" and "uh" fillers, the question on saying fewer fillers covers that habit. For the terms used here, see the voice typing entry, and for the wider privacy picture, read the voice privacy guide.
