Macs are most common in the United States and the United Kingdom. In September 2026 macOS ran 26.44 percent 1 of the desktop computers that loaded pages tracked by StatCounter in the United States, and 24.57 percent 2 in the United Kingdom. They are least common in Brazil at 7.92 percent 3 and India at 6.73 percent 4. The data covers 9 regions, and desktops and laptops only.
The United States and United Kingdom stand apart from the rest
The chart ranks macOS share across the regions in the data.
After those two, there is a middle group that sits close together. France is at 17.37 percent 5. The world figure is 16.74 percent 6. Europe as a whole is at 16.49 percent 7, Germany at 16.23 percent 8, and Japan at 15.01 percent 9.
Then there is a gap. Brazil and India are well below the rest, and in both Windows is overwhelmingly dominant. All rows are in the table.

The trend differs by country: up in the United States, down in Japan
Looking at the first and last readings of each series (January 2019 and September 2026, 93 monthly readings), macOS share moved in different directions:
- United States: from 19.65 percent to 26.44 percent 1.
- United Kingdom: from 21.68 percent to 24.57 percent 2.
- Germany: from 13.79 percent to 16.23 percent 8.
- Europe: from 14.56 percent to 16.49 percent 7.
- India: from 5.26 percent to 6.73 percent 4.
- France: down, from 18.78 percent to 17.37 percent 5.
- Brazil: slightly down, from 8.19 percent to 7.92 percent 3.
- Japan: down sharply, from 25.56 percent to 15.01 percent 9. Japan went from having the highest macOS share in the data in January 2019 to one of the lowest among the richer markets.
Worldwide, macOS rose from 13.61 percent to 16.74 percent 6. Our page on Mac versus Windows share shows the Windows side of the same shift.
What these numbers do and do not measure
The figures are shares of page views, not of Macs sold or in use. Heavy browsers count more, and the sites in StatCounter's network are not a random sample of the web, so a single month can swing by several points. A country's ranking could differ in another sample. The data is published by StatCounter under CC BY-SA 3.0.
The data covers only the nine regions listed and says nothing about other countries. It leaves out phones and tablets, so Apple's iPhone and iPad share is not in it, and systems below StatCounter's reporting threshold are not counted. A Mac that is used mostly for work and rarely for browsing is under-counted. Each row and its source can be opened from the full dataset.
What this means for choosing a dictation tool
If you are in the United States or the United Kingdom, a large share of your colleagues and clients are likely on Macs, so a tool that works only on Windows will not fit every team. In Brazil and India, Windows support matters more. In Germany, France and the rest of Europe the two systems are both common enough that you should check both.
Macs have built-in dictation, which is a good place to start and is free. If it falls short on accuracy, vocabulary or privacy, an on-device app is worth testing. Yap, which we make, is one such option for Mac and Windows. For the wider field, see the market overview, our guide to the best dictation software, and the overview of dictation software.
