Question · Dictation software

How much do dictation apps cost on the App Store?

The typical monthly plan of a dictation, transcription or voice app on the US App Store costs 10 US dollars, and the typical yearly plan costs 79.99 US dollars. Individual plans range from under a dollar to hundreds of dollars, and a maker's own website can charge less.

Across dictation, transcription and voice apps on the US App Store, the typical monthly plan costs 10 US dollars 1 and the typical yearly plan costs 79.99 US dollars 2. Those are medians over every app we track, so half the plans cost less and half cost more. The spread is wide, and the maker's own website may charge less than the App Store does, because Apple takes a commission on in-app purchases.

Yearly plans cost less than a year of monthly payments at the median

The monthly median is 10 US dollars 1. The yearly median is 79.99 US dollars 2. A year of monthly payments at the monthly median would cost more than the yearly median, so yearly plans are usually the cheaper way to pay if you keep an app. The two medians come from different sets of plans, so this is a pattern across the dataset, not a discount on any one app.

Weekly plans are the expensive way to rent an app. The weekly median is 7.99 US dollars 3, below the monthly median but not by much, so paying weekly for a month would cost several times the monthly median.

Plans range from under a dollar to hundreds of dollars

The cheapest monthly plan is YapToText's Coffee Monthly on the Mac App Store at $0.99 4, which ties for the lowest monthly price in the dataset 1. The dearest is Claude Max 20x Monthly in the Claude voice mode listing at $249.99 5. That one is a chatbot subscription with voice input, not a dictation tool, so it says little about what dictation costs.

Yearly plans start at $9.99 for BreezeWhisper's Yearly Pro 6, and ScribeKit's Annual costs the same $9.99 7. The dearest is Denti Note Pro (1 year) at $889.99 8, far above the yearly median 2.

Well-known dictation apps sit on both sides of the medians:

AppMonthlyYearly
Superwhisper$8.49 9$84.99 10
Wispr Flow$15.00 11$143.99 12

Superwhisper's monthly plan costs less than the monthly median and its yearly plan costs a little more than the yearly median. Wispr Flow's Pro plans cost more than both medians. Here are the dictation-app monthly plans the dataset lists:

Transcription and meeting-note apps often list monthly plans far below the median

Several transcription and meeting-note apps list a monthly plan well under the overall monthly median 1. BreezeWhisper's Monthly Pro costs $1.99 20, SubFlow Pro Monthly costs $1.99 21, and Diphony Pro Monthly, a meeting-notes app, costs $1.99 22. Their yearly plans are modest too: SubFlow Pro Yearly costs $12.99 23.

These are examples, not a segment average. The dataset gives one median per billing period across all kinds of app, so we do not claim that transcription or meeting-note apps are cheaper as a group. You can filter the dataset by kind and see for yourself:

Many of these apps also sell minutes or credits instead of a subscription. Rev sells a single credit for $1.99 37, and Simon Says sells a short transcription, up to half an hour, for $0.99 38. The median across all such packs is 9.99 US dollars 39. A pack suits occasional transcription, and a subscription suits daily use.

The maker's own website can charge less because Apple takes a commission

Apple keeps a share of every in-app purchase, and some makers say so. Tsugra's home page says its web prices are lower than its App Store prices 40. Aqua Voice's iPhone page quotes its web prices and warns that App Store billing may differ 41. Our figures are App Store prices only, so before you subscribe, check the maker's own site.

What these numbers do and do not measure

The dataset holds 1295 data points 42, each a price read from a US App Store listing on October 30, 2026. Read the medians with these limits in mind:

  • At most ten purchases per app. Apple shows no more, so an app with more plans can have cheaper or other plans missing.
  • Period read from the name. A purchase called "Monthly" counts as a month. A name that is unclear can be read wrongly, and tips such as "Coffee Tip" have no period.
  • No trials. A free trial or an introductory price is not shown, so what you pay in your first month can differ.
  • US prices only. Other storefronts charge in their own currencies and often less.
  • Every kind of app together. The medians mix iPhone, iPad and Mac, and voice keyboards, voice notes, transcription, meeting notes, professional tools and voice assistants. They are not a price for dictation apps alone.
  • One row per price. An app with several plans counts several times.

What it means for choosing a dictation tool

Decide how often you dictate before you compare prices. For daily use, a yearly plan is usually cheaper than paying monthly, and a weekly plan is the costliest. For occasional use, a minutes pack or a free built-in tool costs less than any subscription. Compare the maker's website price with the App Store price, and read the full list of purchases on the app's page.
