Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking work over Remote Desktop?
Nuance's Dragon Professional 16 documents do not say that Dragon works over Microsoft Remote Desktop, so do not assume it does. The one remote setup its release notes mention is Citrix, where Dragon can fail to recognize dictation in Generic Mode, and Nuance's workaround is optimized mode. Test dictation and commands in your own session before you rely on it.

The Dragon Professional 16 help and release notes do not say that Dragon works over Microsoft Remote Desktop. Without a statement from Nuance, treat it as unsupported and test it yourself before you depend on it. The one remote setup that the release notes mention is Citrix, and it has a known issue with a documented workaround.
Nuance's current documents do not cover Microsoft Remote Desktop
We searched the Dragon Professional 16 help and its release notes for Remote Desktop, Terminal Services, virtual machines and Citrix. Only Citrix appears. A search result for an older Nuance feature sheet described remote desktop on Windows Server 2008 R2 and 2012. We could not open that sheet, and those Windows versions are out of support, so do not rely on it for a modern setup.
Nuance's Dragon Professional 16 release notes list Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 support 1. Being a supported operating system does not show that dictation works through a remote session, so that list does not answer the question on its own.
Citrix is the one remote setup the release notes mention
The Dragon Professional 16 release notes list a known issue: Dragon does not recognize dictation or commands when using the Citrix environment in Generic Mode 2. The workaround printed under that issue is to run Citrix in optimized mode 3.
If your organization uses Citrix, ask the administrator which mode the Citrix sessions run in. The notes do not say which Citrix version or Dragon build the issue was tested on, so confirm the workaround in your own environment.
Audio and the profile are where remote setups tend to break
Nuance says dictation needs an audio input device capable of 16-bit recording 4. A remote session may handle your microphone's audio differently from a local computer. Nuance's pages do not say how any particular remote product passes audio through, so check it in your own session.
Your profile stores the type of microphone you use 5. If a remote session presents a different microphone from the one your profile was built with, recognition may suffer. That is our inference from how profiles work, not a statement Nuance makes about remote sessions.
Dragon Professional Anywhere is a different product
Nuance also sells Dragon Professional Anywhere, which its 2021 training guide describes as cloud-hosted 6. That product is separate from Dragon Professional on Windows. We did not verify its remote session support, so check its current documentation before you buy it for remote work. The Dragon Professional Anywhere glossary entry explains the product in more detail.
How to test a remote setup before you rely on it
- Ask your administrator whether the environment is Citrix or Microsoft Remote Desktop, and, for Citrix, whether sessions run in optimized mode.
- In the remote session, run Dragon's sound check by saying "Check Audio" 7. If the check fails, the microphone is not reaching Dragon in that session.
- Dictate a test paragraph with punctuation, then say "Correct That" to confirm that the correction command works. Nuance documents that command for Dragon 15 8, so confirm it in your own version.
- If recognition fails, work through the causes in the question on why Dragon does not recognize a microphone.
For the installation requirements of the desktop product, see Dragon NaturallySpeaking system requirements. For the full setup, read the parent guide to Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and the dictation software overview.
