Question · Dictation in your apps
Why is voice typing missing in Google Docs?
Voice typing is missing in Google Docs for three likely reasons: the browser is not one Google lists (Chrome, Edge or Safari), an administrator may have turned the feature off for your organization, or you are on a phone, where Google's steps do not apply. Google's help page still described the feature in its copy archived on 10 October 2026, so the feature had not been removed by then.

If you cannot find voice typing in Google Docs, the cause can be the browser, the account or the device, not a removal. Google's help page for the feature still describes it in October 2026 1. Check the browser first, then your account type, then the device. Google's steps are written for a computer in a supported browser, and an administrator may have turned the feature off for a work or school account 2.
Google has not removed voice typing from Docs
Google's current help page, in the copy archived on 10 October 2026, still tells you to open Tools, then Voice typing, and to click the microphone 3. It describes the feature as a way to type and edit a document by speaking, in Google Docs and in the speaker notes and captions of Google Slides 1. A page that describes a feature in this way is not a removal notice.
We did not find a Google notice that the menu item moved or was taken out. If you cannot find it, the reasons below cover the likely causes.
The browser is the first thing to check
Google says the feature works with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari 4. If you use another browser, such as Firefox, switch to Chrome, Edge or Safari, then open the document again.
Update the browser before you switch. The page says "the latest versions," so an old copy of a supported browser may not be the one Google means. Google's page does not say which version is the oldest that works, so the latest one is the safe choice.
An administrator may have turned it off
Google's page includes a tip for work and school accounts. If the feature is not enabled in your organization, it may have been turned off by your administrator 2. On a managed account you may not be able to change this setting yourself, so ask your administrator whether voice typing is allowed.
A personal Google account is not covered by that tip. If you use a personal account and the menu is still missing in a supported browser, the browser is the next thing to check.
On a phone, the Tools menu is not there
Google's voice typing steps begin with a document open in a supported browser 3. Google said in May 2024 that it extended voice typing to Edge and Safari and that these features are available only on desktop 5. We found no Google page that describes a Voice typing menu in the Docs phone apps, so do not expect the computer steps to work there.
On a phone, dictate with your keyboard's microphone instead. Our question on voice typing in Google Docs on a phone gives those steps for Android and iPhone.
If the menu is there but the microphone does not respond
A missing menu and a silent microphone are different problems. The page says your computer microphone must be on and working before you use voice typing or voice commands 6. If the menu appears and nothing is typed, check the microphone next.
Google's troubleshooting steps ask you to check that the microphone is plugged in and is not being used by another application 7. Close any app that holds the microphone, such as a call or a recorder, and try again. Our question on why voice typing is not working covers those failures in order.
Check these in order
- Open the document in Chrome, Edge or Safari, and update the browser to its latest version.
- Open the document on a computer, not a phone or tablet.
- Click Tools, then Voice typing. If the item is still missing, go to the next step.
- Ask your administrator if the account is a work or school account, and whether voice typing is allowed.
- Check that the microphone is plugged in, is on and is not in use by another app, then try again.
If the steps do not help, test Chrome's microphone access for the site. Our answer on why dictation is not working in Chrome covers that check.
