Can Google Docs transcribe an audio file?
Google Docs does not appear to transcribe files. Its voice typing listens to your live microphone and types what you say, and the Google help pages we could read describe no way to upload an audio file or video. To transcribe a file, use a tool that accepts uploads, such as Word's Transcribe feature for Microsoft 365 on Windows or Voice Memos on a Mac.

Google Docs cannot transcribe a saved audio file, as far as the Google documentation we could read says. Voice typing is a live feature: you click the microphone in Docs and speak, and the words appear in the document. Nothing in the pages we read describes uploading an MP3, an M4A, a WAV or a video and getting its text back. To transcribe a recording, use a tool built for uploads, and choose it by your license, your computer and how many minutes you need.
Google Docs voice typing listens to a live microphone
Google's steps for voice typing end with clicking the microphone box that appears in the document, and then speaking 1. Google describes the feature as a way to type and edit by speaking in Google Docs or in Google Slides speaker notes 2. Both descriptions are about speech you make at the moment, not about audio that already exists.
We read the December 2020 archived copy of Google's Docs help page, which is available from the University of North Texas web archive. It says nothing about uploading an audio file or a video. Google's current help page, in its 10 October 2026 archived copy, still describes voice typing as a way to type and edit by speaking 3, and the parts of it we read describe no upload either. If Google has added file transcription since then, the live page would show it, and you should check it before you plan a project around it.
Playing a recording out loud into the microphone is a possible workaround, but Google's pages do not cover it. You would be relying on the room and the speakers to carry the sound, in real time, to a feature built to listen to a speaker. We did not test that route and we do not recommend it for a transcript you need to keep.
Word transcribes uploaded audio on Windows
The clearest route Microsoft documents is in Word. In the Transcribe pane, you select Upload audio 4. Word currently supports .wav, .mp4, .m4a and .mp3 files 5.
That feature has three conditions you need to check:
| Condition | What Microsoft says |
|---|---|
| Where it works | Only in Word for Microsoft 365 on Windows in commercial tenants 6 |
| Monthly limit, Microsoft 365 | Up to 300 minutes of uploaded audio per month 7 |
The 300-minute limit is for Microsoft 365 subscriptions, so check which plan your account has before you plan a large backlog.
If you are on a Mac, Word's feature does not apply to you. For Copilot's own voice features, read the question on whether Copilot can transcribe audio.
Voice Memos on a Mac transcribes recordings
If your recording is on a Mac, Apple's Voice Memos app can transcribe it. Apple says speech in audio recordings can be recognized and transcribed to text in Voice Memos 8. Apple says this works with macOS Sequoia on a Mac with Apple silicon 9, so check your version and chip before you plan the work. Our question on transcribing a voice memo on a Mac walks through the steps.
Choose the tool by what you need to transcribe
| Your situation | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to dictate new text into Docs | Google Docs voice typing | It types what you say live, in a supported browser |
| One file, Windows, Microsoft 365 | Word's Transcribe feature | It accepts uploads, within your monthly minutes |
| One recording on a Mac | Voice Memos | It recognizes and transcribes speech in recordings |
| One file on any computer | A browser tool such as our free audio to text page | It takes an upload and returns text in the browser |
Each of these is a different job. Dictating live means you speak and the text appears as you go. Transcribing means the file already exists and you want its text. Our question on the difference between dictation and transcription explains the split, and the definition of dictation covers the live case.
What to do if you need a transcript
- Decide whether you need live dictation or a transcript of a file you already have. Google Docs answers the first, not the second.
- For a file on Windows with Microsoft 365, open Word, open the Transcribe pane, and select Upload audio. Check your monthly minutes first.
- For a recording on a Mac, open it in Voice Memos and check that the transcript appears.
- For a single file on any other computer, use a browser tool and check its accuracy on a short sample before you rely on it. Our guide to transcribing audio to text explains the options.
- Paste the transcript into Google Docs once you have it, and edit it there.
