What languages does Google Docs voice typing support?
Google Docs voice typing works in a long list of languages and accents on Google's current help page, and that list includes Hindi and two Urdu entries, Urdu (India) and Urdu (Pakistan). The editing commands work only in English, and punctuation phrases might not be available in every language, so check both before you start.

Google Docs voice typing supports a long list of languages and accents, and Hindi is on it. Google's current help page lists Hindi, along with two Urdu entries, Urdu (India) and Urdu (Pakistan) 1 2. Being on the list means you can speak the language into a document. It does not mean every feature works in that language, because Google's page limits the editing commands to English 3.
The list covers many languages, and many have regional entries
The December 2020 copy introduces its list with the words "Voice typing works in these languages and accents" 4. The list is long, and its entries run through Urdu and Vietnamese to Zulu 2. It is not one entry per language. Some languages appear several times, once for each region or accent. Spanish is the clearest case, with a separate entry for each of many countries, such as Spanish (Argentina), Spanish (Bolivia) and Spanish (Chile) 5.
Arabic has 14 regional entries as well 6. Choose the entry that matches your accent or your country, not only the name of the language. The page does not explain how each variant is recognized, so test the one you plan to use.
Hindi has been on the list since at least 2020
Hindi is not new to the list. A December 2020 copy of Google's help page also named Hindi among the languages and accents that voice typing works in 7. The current copy from 10 October 2026 still lists it 1, so Hindi appears on both copies.
Urdu has two regional entries, one for India and one for Pakistan. Choose the entry that matches the Urdu you speak. Google's page does not say how the two compare in accuracy.
Editing commands work only in English
Voice commands are the words that edit or format a document, such as "Select paragraph" 8 or "Undo" 9. Google's page says they are available only in English, and it adds that the account language and the document language must both be English 3. In a Hindi or Urdu document, you can speak the text, but you cannot use the commands to edit it.
This matters for a common workflow. Dictate the text in Hindi or Urdu, then make corrections with the keyboard or mouse. Our question on the Google Docs voice typing commands lists the English commands, and it explains what to do when a command does not work.
Punctuation phrases might not work in every language
Punctuation comes from spoken phrases such as "period" and "comma". Google's page warns that punctuation might not be available in every language 10. The page does not say which languages lack the phrases, so the safe step is to test them before a long session. Say "period" and "comma" in your language, and check whether the marks appear. Our question on punctuation in Google Docs voice typing explains the phrases that Google lists, and the spoken punctuation entry explains the term.
What to do before you start
- Open Google Docs in Chrome, Edge or Safari, because the feature is not on Google's list for other browsers.
- Check that the language you need is on the current list. Pick the entry for your region, such as Urdu (Pakistan) or Urdu (India).
- Make sure both the account language and the document language are English if you need voice commands.
- Speak a short test in the language you plan to use, and check the words and the punctuation phrases.
- If you need editing commands in another language, use voice typing for the text and the keyboard for the edits.
Our overview of Google Docs voice typing explains the browser steps, the microphone and the limits in one place. For dictation in other languages in other apps, see our overview of dictation in your apps, and the question on the best dictation app for Google Docs if Docs does not meet your needs.
