Question · Dictation software
Is Superwhisper better than Apple Dictation?
Apple Dictation is the better starting point if you want built-in dictation on a Mac or iPhone and do not need to choose models or modes. Superwhisper is better if you want to pick the speech model, use custom vocabulary or modes, or dictate on Windows or Android. A 2025 test found Whisper more accurate than Apple's engine, but it was one recording, so test both on your own text.

Not for everyone, and not on every point. Apple Dictation is built into the Mac and iPhone, and on a Mac its general text is processed on the device 1. Superwhisper is better when you want to choose the speech model, use custom vocabulary or modes, or dictate on Windows or Android. On accuracy, the one published test we found favored Whisper, but it used a single recording from 2025, so treat it as a direction rather than a verdict. For the wider picture, see our guide to AI dictation apps.
Apple Dictation is built in and keeps general text on the device
Apple Dictation needs no separate app. On a Mac, Apple says general text Dictation is processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers, and you can check this in Keyboard settings 1. Apple lists 48 language and regional variants for on-device Dictation on the Mac 2, so for most major languages the built-in tool covers the basics.
Apple also has a newer model. The macOS 27 feature called More advanced Dictation uses an Apple Intelligence model, and Apple lists it for only nine English variants 3. If you need that model, check your language and your Mac before you plan around it.
Superwhisper gives you the choices Apple Dictation does not
Superwhisper's free plan runs local Whisper models, and it adds custom vocabulary and text replacements, with up to two modes 4. Whisper is the speech recognizer that the free plan runs locally, so the free plan is where you start.
The paid Pro plan adds cloud models, AI processing and file transcription 5. It also sells a one-time lifetime license for $249.99 6. Set those costs against a built-in tool that comes with the Mac.
Superwhisper also runs on Windows and Android, which Apple Dictation does not cover. If you move between Apple and Windows or Android devices, Superwhisper covers more of them.
The one published test we found favors Whisper on accuracy
In a 2025 test, 9to5Mac ran one 7-minute-31-second podcast episode through several engines and scored each transcript for word error rate, the share of words that differ from a correct transcript. Whisper Large V3 Turbo had a word error rate of 1.5 percent 7. Apple's speech API had 10.3 percent 8. The test is on the same recording and the same scoring method for each engine, which is what makes the comparison fair.
Three limits apply. The test used one recording, on one Mac, scored by one author, who noted that his results might vary for others. The author reached Apple's engine through a third-party app, not through the Dictation feature itself. And the test is from 2025, before the macOS 27 model. So it tells you that Whisper was more accurate on that recording, not how either app will do on your writing today.
It depends on the choices you need and the devices you use
- Apple Dictation is enough if you use a Mac or iPhone, dictate general text, do not need to pick models, and do not need custom modes.
- Superwhisper is the better fit if you need Windows or Android, want local processing with a model you choose, want custom vocabulary or modes, or want a mode with no AI step.
- Check the mode, not only the app. Superwhisper's cloud models and AI modes send your audio or text out, so a Pro setting can differ from its free default. Apple's Keyboard settings show where Apple's own Dictation runs.
Accuracy in the test was measured with one error-rate method on one recording, so do not treat it as a score for your voice, microphone or vocabulary. Your microphone and room also change the result.
What to do: dictate the same paragraph into both
- Choose a 150-word paragraph you would really write, with the names and terms you use.
- Dictate it into Apple Dictation on your Mac, in the same room and with the same microphone.
- Dictate it into Superwhisper using the Free plan first, in the mode you would use every day.
- Count the errors in each draft: names, numbers, words that sound alike, and punctuation. Then time the fixes, since the fixing time is the part that matters.
- Decide on cost. Apple Dictation comes with the Mac, so there is no separate app to buy. Only Superwhisper's paid plans carry a charge, so use the free plan first and buy only if it falls short.
If the Apple draft needs few fixes, you have your answer, and you do not need to pay. If it needs many, try Superwhisper's free plan before you buy.
