Question · Dictation on Mac
How do you reset dictation on a Mac?
Apple does not describe a reset for Dictation. The step it supports is to turn Dictation off and on in Keyboard settings, then test in Notes and restart the Mac if it still fails. Do not delete speech preference files or turn off System Integrity Protection, which some third-party guides suggest.

Apple does not describe a reset for Dictation on a Mac. The closest step it supports is to turn Dictation off and back on in Keyboard settings, then test it in Notes. If it still fails, restart the Mac and test again. Treat the restart as a test, not a repair, because Apple's own list of fixes does not include it. Leave the Terminal commands and the security changes that some guides suggest alone.
Apple documents the switch, not a reset
Apple's troubleshooting for Dictation begins with a list of fixes: "Here are some solutions to try: Be sure Dictation is turned on in Keyboard settings" 1. The list then moves to the language, the shortcut, the microphone and the connection. None of those steps is labeled a reset, and the page does not tell you to restart the Mac for Dictation.
So a reset, in practice, means using the one control Apple gives you for Dictation: its on and off switch. You turn Dictation off in Keyboard settings, turn it on again, and test.
The reset in five steps
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Go to Dictation and turn it off.
- Wait a few seconds, then turn it on again. On macOS 27, Dictation is turned on in this same pane, and you click Enable to confirm 2.
- Open Notes, click into a blank note, and dictate one sentence. Use the Dictation shortcut or choose Edit > Start Dictation.
- If it still fails, restart the Mac and test again in Notes.
Do one thing at a time. If the sentence works, you can stop there, but keep a note of what you changed, because the same fault may come back. If it does, the fix that worked was probably temporary, and the checks in why Mac dictation is not working are the next step.
What the reset does not change
The Dictation pane holds more than the switch. Turning it off and on does not change the language, the shortcut or the microphone you chose, so check those before you call the reset a failure. The language is set in the same pane, the shortcut has its own setting, and the microphone is chosen in the Microphone source menu, as explained in how to change the microphone Mac dictation uses.
Two settings sit outside the Dictation pane. Voice Control replaces standard Dictation while it is on 3, so turn it off first if Dictation will not start. An administrator can also turn off Dictation through Screen Time 4. On a work or family Mac, check both before you reset anything.
Why deleting preference files is a last resort
Some guides go further. The Guiding Tech guide's Fix 4 tells readers to delete the speech recognition preference files, which it says also handle dictation, and then restart the Mac 5. That is not an Apple step, and it throws away your saved speech settings. Deleting files is harder to undo than turning a switch off, so use it only after the switch test fails, and only if you accept losing those settings. Back up the files first if you can.
What to refuse
The same guide's Fix 2 tells readers to run csrutil disable from Recovery mode, restart, and then run a Terminal command that disables the corespeechd process 6. Do not do this to reset Dictation. Apple says macOS applies System Integrity Protection's security policy to every process running on the system 7. Turning that protection off to repair one feature gives up a safeguard that covers the whole Mac, and none of Apple's Dictation steps asks for it. If you have already changed it, turn it back on before you go on.
When a reset is the wrong tool
A reset does not fix a missing permission, a wrong language, or a connection problem, so test those first. Apple says Dictation on a Mac may need an internet connection 8, so a connection problem can be the real cause, and Apple points you to Network settings to check it. If Dictation works in Notes but fails in one app, the problem is that app's microphone access, and a reset will not change it.
For the cases where the reset does not help, read why Mac dictation keeps stopping if it stops on its own, or why the Mac dictation shortcut is not working if the key does nothing. The full set of checks is in why Mac dictation is not working, and how to fix it. For the overview of the feature, see dictation on Mac and the guide to how to use Dictation on a Mac.
