Can young people get carpal tunnel syndrome?
Yes, but it is uncommon at a young age, and the causes change with age. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs most often between 30 and 60, and in children it is rare and usually has an underlying condition. Persistent numbness in a young person still deserves a clinical check, because the cause may be something other than typing.

Young people can get carpal tunnel syndrome, but it is less common than in middle age, and the causes often differ. In children it is rare and usually has an underlying condition. In young adults, the first question is usually what is causing the symptoms, not whether they are normal. This page sets out the evidence by age group and explains what to do.
This page is part of our guide to carpal tunnel syndrome, which sits within our overview of speech to text for accessibility, RSI and disabilities. It explains the research and does not give individual medical advice.
Young adults can get it, but it is most common between 30 and 60
MedlinePlus says carpal tunnel syndrome occurs most often in people aged 30 to 60, and it lists other factors such as obesity, wrist fractures, arthritis and fluid retained during pregnancy 1.
The age pattern is also changing over time. In a records study of residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota, the incidence in younger people appeared to fall in 2000 to 2005, while it rose in older people 2. The same authors found that older patients presented with more severe disease and were more likely to have carpal tunnel surgery 3.
In children, carpal tunnel is rare and usually has an underlying condition
Carpal tunnel syndrome in children is uncommon. A 2021 study of 38 children from two pediatric neuromuscular centers in Switzerland describes it as rare in childhood and most often caused by a secondary condition 4. In that cohort, mucopolysaccharidosis, a group of inherited metabolic diseases, was the most frequent underlying condition, found in 37 percent of the children 5.
The authors of that study recommend a thorough search for an underlying cause in this age group. A child with numbness should be seen by a clinician who can arrange that search.
In adults, the best-documented causes are medical and personal, not keyboard work
For adults, the risks with the best measured evidence are personal and medical: diabetes, pregnancy, body weight and forceful or vibrating hand work. Thyroid disease is less clear: a 2025 study of 480 referred patients found no statistically significant overall link 6. Keyboard work has much weaker evidence than these, and our guide explains why in can typing cause carpal tunnel syndrome. Pregnancy is a common reason for symptoms in women of childbearing age. In a Dutch cohort of 639 pregnant women, 34 percent reported carpal tunnel symptoms during pregnancy 7. Whether those symptoms last after birth is covered in does carpal tunnel go away after pregnancy.
Amyloid deposits are another cause, but they are an older-adult concern. In one study of people having surgery for idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome, amyloidosis was found on biopsy in 10.2 percent of men over 50 and women over 60 8. That finding describes older adults, so amyloid is a less likely explanation for numbness in a young person.
What to do if a young person has numbness in the hand
- Note the details. Write down which fingers are numb, whether the numbness wakes you, how long it lasts after you stop an activity, and what brings it on. These details help a clinician choose sensible tests.
- Pay attention to the little finger. The median nerve does not supply the little finger 9, so tingling there points toward another cause rather than the carpal tunnel.
- Mention relevant history. Include pregnancy, thyroid or blood sugar problems, and any family history of carpal tunnel or inherited metabolic disease. The question of family history is covered in is carpal tunnel syndrome hereditary.
- Get a clinical check if numbness persists, returns, wakes you, or your grip weakens. The options from splints to surgery are set out in our guide to carpal tunnel treatment.
Symptoms that get worse at night are covered in why carpal tunnel is worse at night. If typing is uncomfortable while you wait, the dictation guide for RSI and carpal tunnel shows how to move some keyboard work to speech.
The median nerve is the nerve at the center of this condition, and how carpal tunnel is diagnosed explains the tests a clinician may order.
