Can typing cause carpal tunnel syndrome?
Typing is unlikely to cause carpal tunnel syndrome by itself. Keyboard use raises pressure inside the wrist in laboratory tests, but a one-year study of workers found no significant link to keyboard use. The work risks with the most support here are heavy mouse use, forceful handgrip and vibrating tools.

Typing can raise the pressure inside your wrist, but the research does not show that keyboard work causes carpal tunnel syndrome. The best current answer is that typing is at most a weak cause. The exposures with better evidence are heavy mouse use, forceful handgrip at work and vibrating tools. If you already have symptoms, the more useful question is whether typing is making them worse, and that is worth raising with a clinician.
Laboratory tests show that typing raises wrist pressure
A laboratory study measured carpal tunnel pressure in healthy volunteers holding their hands in set postures. Typing raised the pressure compared with holding the same hand posture still 1. Wrist position mattered too. Bending the wrist back into extension was associated with higher pressure 2.
These results show a mechanism, not an outcome. The volunteers were healthy and the measurements covered one short session, so the study cannot say how often typing leads to the condition over years of use.
Studies of real workers find no keyboard link
A one-year Danish follow-up of workers is the most direct test. It found an association between mouse use above 20 hours a week and possible carpal tunnel syndrome 3. It found no significant association with keyboard use 4.
A systematic review of eight epidemiological studies looked at the wider evidence and concluded there is insufficient evidence that computer work causes the condition 5. The table below sets out the three sources a reader is most likely to meet.
| Source | Design | What it found about typing |
|---|---|---|
| Rempel 2008 | Laboratory measurement in healthy volunteers | Typing raised carpal tunnel pressure 1 |
| Andersen 2003 | One-year follow-up of Danish workers | No significant keyboard link 4; mouse use above 20 hours a week linked 3 |
| Thomsen 2008 | Systematic review of eight studies | Insufficient evidence that computer work causes the condition 5 |
The clearest work risk is physical load, not keyboards
The clearest work-related risk is physical load. MedlinePlus says some of the jobs linked with carpal tunnel syndrome involve vibrating tools 6. In one study, handgrip with high forces at work was associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, with an adjusted odds ratio of 1.7 7. For most office work, then, the useful question is about the tools and the grip, not the keyboard.
Ergonomic changes are sensible but not proven treatments
The 2022 Cochrane review found insufficient trial evidence on whether ergonomic positioning or equipment helps or harms people being treated for carpal tunnel syndrome 8. Good posture, regular breaks and a relaxed wrist are sensible precautions, but they are not proven treatments.
What about gaming and other hobbies?
People often ask about gaming, knitting or playing the guitar. We did not find a study that measured carpal tunnel syndrome in gamers or hobbyists, so the research does not address those activities directly. The same reasoning applies, though: the exposures with some evidence behind them are heavy mouse use, forceful handgrip at work and vibrating tools. Reduce those where you can, and treat persistent hand numbness as a reason to get checked, not as a hobby problem.
What to do if your fingers tingle at the keyboard
- Note which fingers tingle. Carpal tunnel symptoms mainly affect the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers 9, which the median nerve supplies. Numbness in the little finger does not fit that pattern, because the little finger is supplied by the ulnar nerve 10.
- Reduce the load. Take regular breaks and move long drafting to your voice. The guide to dictation for RSI and carpal tunnel shows how to shift work in stages. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, so it is one option for that shift, alongside the free tools already on your computer.
- Get persistent numbness checked. If it goes untreated for too long, it can lead to permanent problems in the hand, including loss of finger sensation and weakness 11, so do not wait for weakness to appear.
Tingling that comes with aching and stiffness across the forearm and shoulder may point toward a different pattern, covered in RSI from typing and the entry on repetitive strain injury. The guide to typing ergonomics covers desk setup in more detail.
