Does carpal tunnel go away after pregnancy?
Carpal tunnel symptoms that start in pregnancy often ease after delivery, but for many women the improvement is not complete. In a 2007 Italian cohort, about half of the women still reported symptoms three years after delivery, even though their scores had improved overall.

Carpal tunnel syndrome that starts in pregnancy often improves after delivery, but the evidence does not show that it goes away completely for everyone. A 2007 Italian study followed women for three years and found that symptom scores improved overall, while about half still had complaints 1. The nerve itself can take longer to recover than the symptoms do 2, so the honest answer is that many women improve, a sizable share still have symptoms years later, and a persistent case is worth checking.
Pregnancy symptoms are common, and most of them ease
Carpal tunnel symptoms are common in pregnancy. In a Dutch prospective cohort of 639 pregnant women, 34 percent reported carpal tunnel symptoms during pregnancy 3.
Carpal tunnel syndrome more generally can take months to get better, according to the NHS 4. Expect a gradual change after birth rather than an immediate end to symptoms.
Three years on, about half still have symptoms
The Italian study enrolled consecutive pregnant women with carpal tunnel syndrome and followed them during pregnancy, at one year after delivery, and by telephone at three years. At three years, about half of the women still complained of symptoms 1. The study's introduction says the course of pregnancy-related carpal tunnel is considered short and benign, but that view sits alongside a sizeable share who still have complaints.
Scores improved from the start in the group as a whole, which is why the study is best read as evidence of partial recovery for many women rather than of a universal cure.
Nerve tests can stay abnormal after symptoms ease
Symptoms and nerve tests do not always recover together. In the same Italian study, the median nerve's distal sensory conduction velocity improved but remained delayed in 84 percent of women one year after delivery, even though their symptoms had improved 2. A feeling of recovery therefore does not prove that the nerve has fully healed. The sample is small, so the number should be read as a single study, not a general rule.
Fluid retention is linked to the symptoms during pregnancy
Fluid retention is one factor that researchers have linked to symptoms during pregnancy. In the Dutch cohort, higher fluid retention throughout pregnancy was significantly related to carpal tunnel symptoms, with an odds ratio of 1.8 5. The study is observational, so it shows an association rather than proof that fluid causes the symptoms. The study did not test whether symptoms ease when fluid settles after birth, so that step remains unproven.
What to do during pregnancy and after birth
- Use a night splint if numbness wakes you. The NHS advises wearing a wrist splint at night to relieve pressure on the nerve, and says you may need up to 6 weeks before it starts to feel better 6.
- Track the course after delivery. Note whether the numbness is shrinking over the first months. Symptoms that are clearly fading are a good sign, and symptoms that are not fading after several months are worth raising.
- See a clinician if it persists or weakens. If carpal tunnel goes untreated for too long, it can lead to permanent loss of feeling and weakness in the hand 7. Do not wait for weakness to appear before getting checked.
This page does not give individual medical advice. Pregnancy changes the balance of risks, so a midwife, obstetrician or hand specialist is the right person to judge a particular case.
