Is carpal tunnel syndrome a disability?
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be a disability, but it is not one automatically. In the US, the ADA asks whether it substantially limits a major life activity, a test Congress broadened in 2008. In the UK, the Equality Act asks whether it has a substantial, long-term effect on your normal daily activities.

Carpal tunnel syndrome can count as a disability under the two main workplace laws: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the US and the Equality Act 2010 in the UK. Neither law names it. The question is whether the condition limits what you can do, and whether that limit is substantial enough, and lasting enough, to meet the test.

The ADA asks whether carpal tunnel substantially limits a major life activity
Under the ADA, a person with a disability is someone who has "a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities" 1. Carpal tunnel is a physical impairment, so the test turns on the limit the condition causes, such as limits on typing, gripping or writing by hand, rather than on the name of the condition.
Congress made the test broader after a carpal tunnel case
In Toyota Motor Manufacturing v. Williams (2002), a worker claimed disability because of carpal tunnel syndrome. The Supreme Court held that the lower court had applied the wrong standard, and it reversed that ruling 2.
Congress responded in 2008. Its findings say the Supreme Court's reading required more limitation than Congress intended 3. The regulations now say that "substantially limits" shall be construed broadly in favor of expansive coverage 4. They also say that whether an impairment meets the test requires an individualized assessment 5. A diagnosis therefore does not settle the question by itself, and two people with the same diagnosis can get different answers.
Your own limits decide the answer, not the diagnosis name
Carpal tunnel runs from occasional numbness to pain that stops you gripping a mouse or writing by hand. For example, symptoms that flare only on certain days may not limit you enough to meet the test. Symptoms that limit your hands through most of the working day may meet it. The assessment looks at what the condition prevents or restricts, and how that affects your work and daily life.
In the UK, the test is a substantial effect lasting 12 months or more
The Equality Act test asks whether you have a physical or mental impairment with a substantial and long-term negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities. GOV.UK says long-term means 12 months or more 6. Carpal tunnel that clears within a few weeks would not meet the long-term part. One that lasts 12 months or more can meet it, if the effect on daily activities is substantial.

A yes in one system does not decide the others. Each uses its own evidence and its own tests.
What to do if you think carpal tunnel counts as a disability
- Describe the limit in task terms. Name the tasks you cannot do well, such as typing for an hour, holding a phone, or writing by hand, and how often each one fails.
- Ask for the diagnosis to describe function. The EEOC says an employer may ask for reasonable documentation about a disability and its functional limits when the need is not obvious 7. Ask your clinician to write down what you cannot do, not only the diagnosis.
- Check the size of your employer. The ADA covers employers with 15 or more employees 8. A smaller employer may fall under state law instead, so check what your state provides.
- Make the accommodation request separately. A request for a reasonable accommodation is a different process from a benefit claim. The steps for asking are in our guide to dictation as a workplace accommodation. The UK equivalent is covered under Access to Work.
