Can you get PIP for carpal tunnel syndrome?
You can get PIP for carpal tunnel syndrome in the UK if it is a long-term condition that makes everyday tasks or getting around difficult for you. PIP depends on how the condition affects you, not on the name of the diagnosis, and working or having savings does not stop eligibility. An activity counts only if you can do it safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and within a reasonable time.

Yes, carpal tunnel syndrome can qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) in the UK, but only through its effect on your daily life. PIP is not paid for a diagnosis. It is assessed on whether the condition makes everyday tasks or getting around difficult for you, over the long term.
PIP is a UK benefit. If you live in the US, the rules on this page do not apply to you, and the VA rating and the disability test pages cover the US systems.

PIP asks what your condition stops you doing
GOV.UK says PIP can help with extra living costs if you have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability and difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition 1. Carpal tunnel is a physical condition, so it can count when its effects are long-term and cause that difficulty. The test is the effect of the condition, not the name of it.
The difficulty has to come from the condition. The assessment looks at what you cannot do, or can do only with difficulty.
Working and having savings do not stop eligibility
You can get PIP if you are working or have savings 2. PIP is not a payment tied to your job, so keeping your job does not rule you out.
Each activity counts only if you can do it safely and repeatedly
The PIP regulations say an assessor treats you as meeting an activity descriptor only if you can do the activity safely, to an acceptable standard, repeatedly and within a reasonable time 3. That matters for carpal tunnel. For example, a hand that can grip a kettle once, but drops it or cannot manage it repeatedly, may not count as being able to do the task.
Describe what happens during each everyday task you find hard, and how often it fails, not only the worst day.
Untreated carpal tunnel can cause lasting hand problems
If carpal tunnel syndrome is left untreated for too long, it can lead to permanent dysfunction of the hand, including loss of finger sensation and weakness, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 4. Keep your clinic letters and a simple diary, since they record how the condition affects you over time.
How to apply and what to prepare
- Check eligibility on GOV.UK. Start with the PIP eligibility page, which sets out the rules for claiming.
- Keep a diary for several weeks. Record each task you find hard or cannot do, such as fastenings, cutting food, carrying, typing or washing your hair, and how the hand behaves on bad days.
- Ask your clinician to describe function. A letter that says what you cannot do is more useful to an assessor than the diagnosis alone.
- Be specific on the form. Describe how often a task fails and what help you need, not only the diagnosis.
This page explains the rules and does not assess any claim or give medical or financial advice. The assessment is made on your own evidence, and the current rules are on GOV.UK.
