Question · Voice and AI
Can Siri, Alexa or Gemini take long dictation?
Not reliably. Assistants stop listening when they decide you have finished, and the pages we checked describe no long-dictation mode for Alexa+ or Gemini. On a Mac, use Dictation instead of Siri, because Apple says Dictation has no timeout for length.

For a long passage, no assistant is a safe choice, and only one of the three has a documented long-dictation tool. On a Mac, Siri hands the job to Dictation, which Apple says has no timeout for length. Alexa+ has no documented long-dictation mode. Gemini's voice input has been redesigned not to submit automatically, but no Google page we checked gives a maximum length. Test any of them on your own text before you rely on it.
Assistants are built to stop, so long speech breaks
An assistant decides when your request is complete, then acts on it. A long passage has many pauses, and each pause is a chance for the assistant to decide you are finished. In a 2023 study of people who stutter, 61 percent of those who were familiar with voice assistants named being cut off before they finished talking as a reason they used them less 1. The participants were people who stutter, so the figure describes them, but the cause is the same for anyone who pauses to think.
Dictation avoids that decision, because you start it and end it yourself. The guide to voice assistants versus dictation explains the difference in more detail.
Siri: use Dictation on a Mac
Apple says you can dictate text of any length on a Mac without a timeout 2. The one stop you need to plan for is silence. Mac Dictation stops automatically when it detects no speech for 30 seconds 3. A short pause to think is fine, but a longer break ends the session, so restart it when you come back.
Siri is the wrong tool for the job. Use Siri for requests, and use Dictation for the letter or the notes. The question on whether Siri can take dictation on a Mac covers the setup.
Alexa+: notes are short, and dictation is not documented
Amazon's help page for Remember This, the Alexa+ feature for notes, says there is no limit to the number of notes you can create 4. That is a limit on the count of notes, not a rule about length, and the page describes the feature as mainly a conversation experience. We found no Amazon page that describes a mode for dictating a long document by voice. If you need a long passage on an Echo or in the Alexa app, do not assume it will be kept intact.
Gemini: the new voice input waits for you
In March 2026, 9to5Google reported that Gemini's redesigned voice input does not submit a prompt automatically, and called the lack of auto-submit ideal for longer prompts 5. That is a real improvement for a long prompt, because the app waits for you to send it.
The report describes the Android app and says the redesign was not yet on iOS at that time. We found no Google page that states a maximum length for Gemini voice input, so test it with a passage of your own. Use Gemini to talk a problem through, and use dictation for the text you keep.
Google Assistant has its own voice typing
Google Assistant also has voice typing, which Google says is available in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish 6. Google says the text you speak with Assistant voice typing stays on your device and is not sent to Google's servers 7. Voice typing is dictation, not an assistant task, so it is the feature to compare with the others on your own text.
ChatGPT Voice is not a record of what you said
ChatGPT Voice is a conversation feature, and OpenAI says its transcripts are not verbatim records and may not exactly match what was said 8. Do not use a voice transcript as the final copy of a letter, a contract or a clinical note.
It depends on what you are writing
- A letter or report on a Mac. Use Dictation. It has no timeout for length, and you can keep going past the point where an assistant would stop.
- A note you will share. Use dictation in the app where the note will live, and read it before you send it.
- A prompt for an AI model. Assistant voice is fine for the prompt, and the guide to speaking prompts to AI covers how to structure a spoken one.
- A passage you must keep exact. Use dictation, then check every line against what you meant, because recognition errors can change words.
What to do
- Dictate a page of your own writing into each tool you might use, in the app where you will work.
- Count where each one stopped you, and count the words it got wrong.
- Keep pauses shorter than 30 seconds on a Mac, or press the shortcut to finish on purpose.
- Read the dictated draft before you send or save it.
If you want dictation that works across apps on a Mac or Windows PC, Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for both. See the download page for the current versions. For Mac setup, read the guide to using Dictation on a Mac.
For the wider comparison, see the question on which AI voice assistant is smartest and the question on what Alexa+ can do. A voice assistant is built to act on a request, and Siri is Apple's version.
