Why is ChatGPT dictation not working?

ChatGPT dictation usually stops for one of three reasons. The microphone is not picking up your voice, the recording does not reach the service that transcribes it, or the service returns nothing. From the text box, all three look the same: you speak and no words appear. Check the microphone and the connection first, then test with a short prompt. The fixes below are the checks that follow from how dictation works. OpenAI's help pages do not publish a troubleshooting list for the microphone button, so we say which steps come from a source and which are our inference.

Dictation is a recording sent to a server, so it can fail in three places

When you press the microphone icon, the recording does not stay on your device. OpenAI says that the recorded audio "is sent to our models to be transcribed," and the text comes back for you to edit before you send it ¹. That means three links have to work: the microphone captures sound, the recording uploads, and the transcript returns. A break at any link leaves you with an empty box, which is why the symptom alone does not tell you where the fault is.

Nothing appears at all: check the microphone first

The most common report is that the microphone seems to respond and no text arrives. In an April 2025 OpenAI community post, one user said that on Chrome "nothing seems to register at all," and that in the Android app the app "listens, registers voice, but then never delivers anything to text" ². That is one user's report from 2025, so it shows a failure pattern, not how often it happens.

Work through these checks in order:

1. Confirm the app can use the microphone. On a phone, check the microphone permission for the ChatGPT app in your system settings.
2. Check the site permission in a browser. If you use ChatGPT in a browser and the site has no microphone access, nothing will be recorded. See the site microphone permission entry.
3. Check which input the computer uses. On a Mac, the Keyboard settings show a Microphone source menu for Apple's own Dictation, and it picks the device you are most likely to use when set to Automatic ³. We could not confirm from a source that ChatGPT follows that menu, so check that the input is the headset or built-in microphone you intend to speak into.
4. Try a second browser or the app. If the browser fails and the app works, the fault is in the browser or its settings. If both fail, the problem is more likely on the account or service side.

Speech arrives but the text is empty or poor: test with a short prompt

OpenAI said on January 12, 2026 that it was "significantly reducing empty transcriptions and improving accuracy" for all logged-in users ⁴. That change targeted the empty-result failure. If you still see it, dictate one short sentence, then a longer one. If the short test works and the long one fails, the problem is probably length or connection, not the microphone.

OpenAI also began rolling out a new speech-to-text model for dictation on June 26, 2026 ⁵. The release note says users did not need to change anything. If your dictation began to misbehave around that date, mention the date in a report, because it is the one documented change to the feature that year.

A dropped connection stops the upload, and iOS retries once

On iOS, ChatGPT retries dictation once when it fails because of a connection problem or a timeout ⁶. The retry is itself evidence that the recording must reach a server before text comes back. A weak Wi-Fi signal or a cellular drop in the middle of a long prompt is therefore a plausible cause, even though OpenAI's note does not say how long the retry waits.

If you are on a weak connection, move closer to the router or switch networks, then dictate again. Long prompts are the most exposed, so test with a short one first.

When the built-in button keeps failing

If the checks above do not fix it, you have two options. You can type the prompt, or you can use a system-wide tool that types into whatever box has the cursor. That approach works in ChatGPT in any browser and in other apps as well. Our guide to dictating into any app explains the trade-offs.

What to include in a bug report

When you report a failure to OpenAI, name the app or browser and its version, the device, the operating system, the exact symptom and the date it started. The April 2025 report above is useful because it names the platform and says what happened. Reports that name the platform are the ones a developer can reproduce.
