Question · Dictation in your apps
What languages does Claude dictation support?
Claude dictation depends on the app. The iOS and Android apps list 12 languages, with support beyond English still in beta, and Claude Code lists 20, including all 12. The pages we read publish no language list for the Claude desktop app or the web, so test your language there before you rely on it.

Claude dictation supports a different number of languages in each app, and the official lists do not match. In the Claude iOS and Android apps, dictation covers 12 languages 1, and support for every language other than English is still in beta 2. In Claude Code, the terminal tool, dictation covers 20 languages 3. The pages we read publish no language list for the Claude desktop app or the web, so for those you have to test your own language.
The mobile apps dictate in 12 languages
Claude's mobile help article gives this list: English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Turkish and Ukrainian 1. The article presents the list as "currently available", so it can change. It also marks support for languages other than English as beta 2.
The first time you dictate, the app asks you to choose a language. To change it later, follow the steps in the Claude mobile dictation help article: tap your initials in the upper right corner, then select Speech Input Language and choose yours.
Claude Code dictation covers 20 languages
Claude Code's list is longer. It runs from Czech to Ukrainian and includes Danish, Dutch, Greek, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish and Swedish 3. Every language on the mobile list is also on it 1, so the eight extra languages are the only ones that exist in Claude Code and not in the mobile apps. The Claude Code documentation does not label any of the 20 as beta.
Claude Code does not have a separate dictation language. Its documentation says that dictation "uses the same language setting that controls Claude's response language" 4. So if you change the language Claude replies in, dictation changes with it. The Claude Code voice dictation docs show the current setting when you run /voice, as "Dictation language: en", and say you change it with /config.
The two lists side by side
| Claude mobile apps | Claude Code | |
|---|---|---|
| Languages listed | 12 1 | 20 3 |
| Non-English support | Beta 2 | No beta label in the documentation |
| How you choose a language | On first use, or Speech Input Language in settings | /config, or the settings file |
| When no language is set | You choose one on first use | Defaults to English 4 |
Neither list includes Mandarin Chinese, Arabic or Vietnamese 3, so Claude's dictation does not cover them in either app.
Voice mode covers more languages, but it is a different feature
Voice mode is the spoken, two-way conversation, and Anthropic says it "supports many more languages" than dictation does 5. The help article gives no count, so you cannot compare its list with the dictation lists above. Use voice mode if you want Claude to talk back to you in a language. For typing a prompt by speaking, only the dictation lists apply. To see how the two differ, read our question on ChatGPT dictation and voice mode, which draws the same line for ChatGPT.
The desktop app and the web publish no language list
Anthropic's Claude Academy tutorial says dictation is available "on the web, mobile, and desktop app" 6, but it names no languages. The Mac help page for quick entry describes the Caps Lock dictation shortcut and the macOS 14 requirement, and it does not list languages either. The only language list we found for the chat apps covers the iOS and Android apps.
The Claude Code desktop app is a separate case. A feature request filed in June 2026 says built-in dictation "appears to be English-only (or auto-detect with no override)" 7, and asks for a language picker. That is one user's account of one app, not a statement from Anthropic, and the chat app may behave differently. It is still a reason to test before you depend on it.
When the answer depends on your language and app
- Your language is on the mobile list. It works in the iOS and Android apps, though non-English support is beta there. It is also on the Claude Code list 3.
- Your language is only on the Claude Code list. Czech, Danish, Dutch, Greek, Indonesian, Norwegian, Polish and Swedish dictate in Claude Code, but not in the mobile apps 1.
- Your language is on neither list. Use another method for it, as described below.
- You use the chat app on desktop or the web. No list is published, so test your language before you rely on it.
The pages we read do not say whether dictation can handle two languages in one sentence. Test your own mixed sentences before you depend on them.
What to do
- Find the app you dictate in. The phone app, Claude Code, and the desktop or web app each have a different answer.
- On a phone, set the language in the app. Tap your initials, select Speech Input Language, and check that your language is on the 12-language list.
- In Claude Code, check the language when you turn voice on. Run /voice, read the dictation language it reports, and change it with /config. You can give a BCP 47 code such as
ja, or a language name such asjapanese. - On desktop or the web, run a test. Dictate one sentence in your language and read the result before you use the feature for real prompts.
- If your language is missing, use a system-wide tool. A tool that types into whichever app has the cursor can cover a language that Claude's own dictation does not, if that tool supports the language. Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows. Check its language list on the download page before you choose it.
