Question · Dictation in your apps
Why is Claude dictation not working?
Claude dictation fails in different ways depending on where you use it. The desktop app has two reported failures from 2026, a dictation that never transcribes on macOS and one that works only on the first try after launch on Windows, and both bug reports were closed without a fix. Check the microphone permission, restart the app, and fall back to the mobile or web app while you test.

Claude dictation can fail in three different places: the Claude desktop app, the phone app, and Claude Code in the terminal. Each has its own requirements, so first identify where you are dictating. The desktop app has the most public failure reports, and both of the ones we could read were closed without a fix. The steps below cover what to check, in the order that rules out the simplest causes first.
The Claude desktop app has two reported failures
Both reports below come from users on GitHub-style issue trackers, not from Anthropic's help pages. They show what can break, not how often.
On macOS, one user reported that dictation never produced a transcription. The report concerns the microphone button in the Claude Code session composer inside the desktop app. It was opened on June 4, 2026 and closed as not planned on July 10, 2026 1. The symptom is audio that is captured and no text that comes back.
On Windows, a second user reported that dictation worked only once. The first attempt after launching the app worked, and later attempts in the same session failed 2. That report was opened on August 30, 2026 and closed as not planned on September 2, 2026. If your dictation works once and then stops, the session is the likely cause, so quit the app completely and open it again before you test.
Check the microphone permission before you blame the app
Dictation needs the microphone, and an app that has no permission cannot record. The Claude Code documentation gives the exact macOS steps for a terminal. If the app reports that microphone access is denied, go to the Microphone setting on a Mac, enable your terminal app, and run /voice again 3.
Two details in those docs matter for troubleshooting. If the terminal does not appear in the Microphone list, there is no switch to turn on, and the permission state has to be reset 4. After you reset the permission, you must quit the terminal with Cmd+Q, because macOS does not ask a process that is already running 5.
For the desktop and phone apps, we could not read an Anthropic article that gives the exact microphone menu. Check the operating system's microphone setting for Claude, and confirm the right input device is selected. We do not give steps we could not confirm.
Mobile dictation depends on the tap and the language
On iOS and Android, you start dictation by tapping the microphone icon on the right side of the chat input, and the first time you choose your language 6. A missed tap on the icon, rather than on the text box next to it, is an easy way to think dictation has failed.
The mobile help article lists 12 languages for dictation 7. If you speak a language outside that list, choose one of the supported languages or type the prompt. Our question on Claude dictation languages compares the lists for each product.
Quick entry on a Mac needs macOS 14 and the Caps Lock shortcut
On a Mac, quick entry in the desktop app starts dictation when you press Caps Lock 8. That shortcut needs macOS 14 or later 9. If Caps Lock does nothing on an older Mac, the operating system version is the first thing to check.
Claude Code has its own sign-in and location rules
In Claude Code, dictation works only when you sign in with a Claude.ai account. It is not available with an API key or a cloud provider 10. It also needs a local microphone, so it does not work in cloud sessions or SSH sessions 11. If you use Claude Code over SSH, dictation will not start, whatever your permissions are.
Try these steps in order
- Note where it fails. Desktop, phone, quick entry or Claude Code. The fixes differ by product.
- Quit and reopen the app. This clears the single-session fault in the Windows report above.
- Check the microphone permission for the app or the terminal, and reset it if the app is missing from the list. Quit the terminal with Cmd+Q after you reset it.
- Dictate one short sentence. If it works, the problem was a longer session or a connection.
- Use the mobile or web app for now if the desktop app keeps failing, and type or dictate there while you wait.
- Report it with details. Give the app version, the operating system, the device and the exact symptom, as the users above did.
If the built-in tools keep failing, a system-wide tool types into any box with the cursor, including the Claude window. Our guide to dictating into any app explains the trade-offs.
