Question · Voice and AI
Can you talk to ChatGPT with voice dictation instead of voice mode?
Yes. In the ChatGPT app, dictation is the microphone icon in the message box: you speak, your words appear as text, and you send the prompt yourself. Voice mode is a different feature, a live spoken conversation, so use dictation when you want to read the prompt before the model sees it.

Yes. Dictation lets you speak a prompt and send it as text, without starting the spoken conversation that voice mode runs. In the ChatGPT app the two features have separate buttons. OpenAI says to use ChatGPT Dictation when you want to record a prompt, review and edit its transcription, and then send it as text 1. This question is part of our overview of speech to text for AI, within voice and AI.
The microphone icon in the text box is dictation
Dictation uses the small microphone icon in the message box, not the large microphone button. OpenAI Academy gives these steps for the ChatGPT mobile and desktop apps:
- Open the ChatGPT app on your phone or computer.
- Tap the microphone icon in the text box, and start speaking. Your words appear as text 2.
- Read the text that appears, and fix any mistakes.
- Send the prompt when it is right.
Step 3 is the reason to choose dictation. The words stay in the box until you send them, so you can correct a name or a number before the model reads it.
The large microphone button starts voice mode. Per OpenAI Academy, you tap and hold it to begin a real-time conversation, and release it to stop 3. In short, a tap on the small icon gives you text, and a hold on the big button gives you a conversation. Our sources describe the mobile and desktop apps. We did not find the same layout described for the web version, so check it there before you rely on these steps.
Dictation gives you text to check, and voice mode gives you a conversation
The two features serve different jobs. Voice mode is for a live exchange. OpenAI's help article says to use Voice for a live, back-and-forth conversation or to talk through ideas 4.
The difference matters most for exact wording. OpenAI says that voice transcripts are not verbatim records and may not exactly match what was said 5. That warning is about voice mode, and it means a prompt with a product name, a figure or a file path is safer as dictated text that you can read and edit. For how recognition errors affect a prompt, and how to read the transcript before you send it, see speech to text for AI.
Your audio goes to OpenAI, and dictation keeps it with the chat
Dictation is not offline. When you press the microphone icon, the recorded audio is sent to OpenAI's models to be transcribed 6. You can review and edit the returned text before you send it 1. OpenAI says the audio is kept for as long as the chat stays in your chat history 7. Check OpenAI's current dictation FAQ for how long audio is kept after you delete a chat.
Training is a separate choice. If you are a consumer user who has chosen to share audio to improve OpenAI's models, dictation audio may be used for training 8. If that matters to you, read OpenAI's dictation FAQ and check your own sharing choice before you dictate sensitive material.
We did not read the retention rules for voice mode in full, so do not assume they match the dictation rules above.
Choose voice mode for conversation and dictation for exact prompts
Use voice mode when a fast spoken exchange is worth more than a carefully checked first draft. Brainstorming, talking a problem through and practicing a conversation all fit. Use dictation for anything you want to send exactly as written:
- A long prompt with a product name or an email address: dictate it, then read the text before you send.
- A quick question while your hands are busy: voice mode, since the reply is built for listening.
- A draft you will paste into another app: dictation, so the text is ready to copy.
If you use dictation for a prompt that includes pasted material, speak the goal first, then the context, then the constraints, so that a misheard word in the middle does not break the request. How to dictate a prompt walks through that order.
It depends: when dictation does not appear or does not type
The choice between the two features is simple. A fault in dictation is a separate problem. If the microphone icon is missing, or dictation records but produces no text, check the steps in why ChatGPT dictation is not working before you decide that voice mode is the only option. If you want the full set of steps for the app, how to dictate in ChatGPT covers them.
Dictation also depends on the microphone you use. If the text comes out wrong, try a different microphone or a quieter room before you assume the feature is broken. For the terms used in this area, see dictation.
What to do
- For a prompt you need to get right, use the microphone icon in the text box, read the transcript, and then send.
- For a live discussion or a spoken reply, hold the large microphone button to use voice mode.
- Before you send any dictated prompt, check names, numbers and code first. Do AI chatbots understand dictation errors explains where a chatbot can recover a slip and where it cannot.
- For the difference between the two features, with more detail on each, see ChatGPT dictation vs voice mode. For the apps and their limits, see dictation in ChatGPT and Claude.
Dictation keeps the speed of speaking while leaving you in control of what gets sent. Voice mode is the right tool when the conversation matters more than the exact words.
