Question · Dictation in your apps
Which versions of Word have Dictate?
Dictate is a Microsoft 365 feature, and Microsoft says it needs an active subscription and a sign-in. Office 2016 and 2019 for Windows do not have it without a subscription. Word 2021 and 2024 appear in Microsoft's list of versions, but its text still requires a subscription, so do not count on a one-time copy.

Dictate is a Microsoft 365 feature. Microsoft says the feature is only available to subscribers 1, and its troubleshooting says that if the button is missing, you should check for an active subscription and a sign-in 2. So the account decides whether you see the button more than the version number does. Word 2016 and 2019 for Windows do not have Dictate without a subscription. Word 2021 and 2024 are listed by Microsoft, but its text still requires a subscription, so a one-time copy is not a route you can plan on.
Word 2016 and 2019 for Windows do not have Dictate without a subscription
Microsoft says that Dictate is not available in Office 2016 or 2019 for Windows unless you have a Microsoft 365 subscription 3. The same article's Applies To list also names Word 2019 and Word 2016 4. The page points both ways, so we read the troubleshooting statement as the rule, because it is the more specific of the two.
If you see no Dictate button in Word 2016 or 2019 for Windows, the missing button is the expected result for a one-time copy. Check your subscription first, then the steps in why Dictate is greyed out in Word if you are signed in and the button is still missing.
Word 2021 and 2024 are listed, but the subscription rule still applies
Microsoft's Applies To list names Word 2024 and Word 2021 for Windows 5, and it names their Mac versions too 6. The same article says the feature is for Microsoft 365 subscribers, and its troubleshooting asks you to check for an active subscription 2.
We could not test a one-time Word 2021 or 2024 copy, so we cannot say whether its button appears. Microsoft's list suggests it might. Microsoft's text does not promise it. If you are signed in to a subscription and still see no button, the answer is in the troubleshooting, not in the version.
The Mac entries in that list are Word 2021 and Word 2024 6, with no Word 2016 or 2019 for Mac. That is the list as written. It does not say what a one-time Mac copy will show.
Word for the web and mobile follow the same account rule
In Word for the web, the steps start from Home > Dictate while you are signed in to Microsoft 365 on a device with a microphone 7. The web app is covered in more detail in Dictate in Word.
On iPad, iPhone and Android, Microsoft's Word Mobile article gives the same subscription check in its troubleshooting: make sure you are signed in with an active Microsoft 365 subscription 8.
Is there a free way to get Dictate in Word?
Microsoft does not list a free desktop version of Word with Dictate. The current steps for Word for the web also start with a Microsoft 365 sign-in 7, which is not the same as a free account.
Some users report otherwise. A Microsoft Q&A reply posted in September 2021 said that the Dictate function is available in the free online version of Word, and it suggested downloading the file from OneDrive afterward 9. That is a volunteer's answer from 2021, and it conflicts with Microsoft's current article. We did not find a current Microsoft statement that a free account gets Dictate. If you want to try the web app without paying, test it with your own account first and do not plan a workflow around it.
Which route to take for each version
| Your version | What Microsoft says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365, Windows or Mac | Needs an active subscription and a sign-in 2 | Sign in, then use Home > Dictate |
| Word 2024 or 2021, one-time | Listed in Applies To 5, text says subscribers only | Check for the button while signed in; plan on a subscription |
| Word 2016 or 2019 for Windows, one-time | Not available without a subscription 3 | Use a subscription, or the built-in voice typing on your system |
| Word for the web | Steps start with a Microsoft 365 sign-in 7 | Sign in on a device with a microphone |
For a one-time copy, the built-in dictation on your system is the fallback. We did not test Windows voice typing or Mac Dictation inside Word for this page, so run a short test in a blank document before you rely on either. The guide to dictating into any app compares them.
What to check before you buy or upgrade
- Check that Word is signed in to the account that has the subscription. The button follows the sign-in, not the install.
- Check the version against Microsoft's list, not against a forum post. The list is in the Applies To box at the top of Microsoft's article.
- Do not confuse Dictate with Transcribe. Dictate types your live speech. Transcribe works on recordings, and it has its own limits. See Word Dictate versus Transcribe.
For the feature's full steps and settings, read Dictate in Word. If the button is missing on a subscription you believe is active, start with why Dictate is not working in Word. To see where the button sits once it appears, read where Dictate is in Word. For the wider subject, see the apps and browsers overview.
