Question · Languages and accents
Can you dictate in two languages at the same time?
Not inside one sentence, as far as the vendor documents we read show. Most built-in dictation works in one language at a time, so you set up both languages and switch between them by hand, and some tools choose a language for a whole request. None of the documents we read says a switch can happen in the middle of a sentence.

You can dictate in two languages, but the tools we checked do not show dictation working in two languages at the same time inside one sentence. Built-in dictation listens for one language at a time. You can set up two languages and switch between them, or let some tools choose a language for a whole request. The case that breaks down is a sentence that mixes both languages, and the documents we read do not say that any of these tools follows a switch in the middle of a sentence.
Our guide to multilingual dictation covers each platform in more depth. For the wider subject, see the languages overview.
Built-in dictation switches between languages, one at a time
On a Mac, Apple says you can change the language you dictate in, or set up Dictation for multiple languages and switch between them as needed 1. Apple describes switching between languages. It does not describe recognizing two languages inside one sentence.
On an iPhone, Dictation follows the keyboard you are using. Apple says that when you use a keyboard for another language, you can use Dictation in that language as well 2. So the switch is the keyboard, and it applies to whatever you say next.
On Windows 11, the switch is the input language. Microsoft says that to switch voice typing languages, you change the input language you use 3. Each change is a manual step.
If you dictate in blocks, one language per message or paragraph, this works well. The question on how to switch dictation languages quickly lists the shortcut for each device.
Automatic detection chooses one language per request
Some products detect the language for you, but they choose one language for the whole request, not for each word. Google's automatic language recognition takes a list of candidate languages. When a request lists several, the service transcribes the audio using one best-fit language from that list 4.
Azure's continuous language identification has the same limit. Microsoft's example is a speaker mainly using Spanish who inserts some English words, and the service does not detect the language change per word 5.
Gboard's advanced voice typing is the closest to switching on its own. Google's help lists six languages for the feature: English, French, German (marked "coming soon"), Italian, Japanese and Spanish 6. The same help says automatic language detection is turned on by default 7, but it does not say whether that switch can happen inside a sentence, so do not assume it can.
Mixed sentences are where the answer changes
A sentence that mixes two languages is the hardest case. Researchers call this code-switching. In a 2025 study of two conversational corpora, Mandarin-English and Spanish-English, Whisper's mixed error rate on code-switched utterances was about 39 percent 8. The authors of a 2025 preprint attribute part of the trouble to the recognizer itself: spontaneous switching within a sentence causes language confusion for code-switching recognizers 9. The word error rate is the measure to compare, and a short test with your own sentences shows it.
What to do
- Set up both languages on the device you dictate on most, using the menus in our guide to changing the dictation language.
- Choose one language before each message or paragraph, and switch between sentences, not inside them.
- Use automatic detection only with a short list of languages you actually speak.
- Test your own mixed sentences before you rely on a tool. Count the errors, and compare the mixed sentences with the single-language ones.
- Proofread any sentence that mixes languages before you send or publish it.
If your two languages are a common pair such as English and Spanish, check whether the tool offers the detection options above before you rely on manual switching. Yap, which we make, is one on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows. Check its language settings on the download page before you rely on it, and test it on a sample of your own sentences first.
