Why is voice memo or voice message transcription not working?
A voice memo or voice message transcript can fail because of the setup: the phone is too old, the language or region is not supported, the transcript switch is off in a chat app, or the recording was deleted. Check those in that order. If they all pass, the audio may be the cause, so transcribe an export with a file tool and check the draft against the sound.

When a voice memo has no transcript, or a voice message shows no text, start with the setup. Check the device, the language and region, the switch that controls transcripts in a chat app, and whether the recording is still in the app. If all four pass and the transcript still fails or comes out wrong, the audio may be the problem, and a file tool or a careful listen will get you further.
Check your phone and the recording's age first
On an iPhone, Voice Memos transcription needs a recent phone. Apple says it is available on iPhone 12 or later 1. An older phone will not show the option at all, and no setting changes that. If you are on a supported iPhone but the transcript is missing for one recording, check when you made it. Apple says that a recording made in an earlier version of Voice Memos, on iOS 17 or earlier, is transcribed when you open it, as long as it contains recorded speech 2. Open the recording, wait a moment, and look again before you assume it failed.
Your region also matters. Apple says transcription in Voice Memos is not available in all countries or regions 3. If the speech bubble never appears on a supported iPhone, your region may be one of them. In that case the built-in route will not work, and you need a file tool.
Check the language, because a wrong language produces a wrong transcript
A transcript can look present and still be wrong, because automatic speech recognition guesses each word from the sound. WhatsApp warns that its transcripts can contain errors when the transcript language does not match the message, or when background noise makes words unclear 4. Set the language to the one the speaker uses, then try again.
Chat voice messages often have the switch off
Chat apps are a separate case. WhatsApp turns voice message transcripts off by default, so you must switch them on yourself 5. Until you do, the transcript will not appear. Turn the feature on in WhatsApp's settings, then retry. Also remember that a transcript is shown only to the person who received the message 6. If you sent the voice message, the transcript will not appear for you. Ask the recipient for their text, or send your own words.
A recording that vanished may be in Recently Deleted
A recording that seems to have vanished may be in the Recently Deleted folder. Apple says deleted recordings move there, where they are kept for 30 days by default 7. To look, open Voice Memos, find the Recently Deleted folder, and recover the recording. The period can be changed in the Voice Memos settings, so check how long your phone keeps deleted items.
Imported audio in note apps may have no transcript
In Goodnotes, a user comment on the company's feedback forum, from December 2025, asks for audio files and MP3 files to be transcribed too, not only live recordings 8. That suggests imported audio was not transcribed at that time, so check Goodnotes' current pages. If you import a file and no transcript appears, the app's limits may be the cause, not your settings. Transcribe the file with a separate tool instead. For Apple Notes, see whether Apple Notes can transcribe audio.
When the setup checks pass, the audio is the usual cause
If the feature is on, the phone is supported, and the language matches, the remaining problem is the sound. Background noise and unclear speech reduce accuracy 4. You cannot change the recording, but you can change how you handle it. Play the audio and listen for names, numbers and dates, because these are where a draft most often goes wrong. A transcript that gets the general meaning right can still change a figure. The guide on voice memos to text explains the check in full.
What to do, in order
- Confirm the phone. For Voice Memos on iPhone, you need iPhone 12 or later. If you have an older phone, go straight to step 6.
- Open the recording and wait. For an older recording, open it so the phone can transcribe it.
- Check the language and region. Confirm the speaker's language is on the feature's list, and that your country or region is supported.
- Check the switch, for chat apps. Turn on transcripts in WhatsApp, as described above.
- Look in Recently Deleted. Recover a recording deleted within the last 30 days.
- Export and use a file tool. If the recording still has no transcript, share the audio file and transcribe it with a file tool, such as our free file transcription in the browser. The method, and when a human transcriptionist is worth the cost, is in how to transcribe audio to text.
- Check the draft against the audio. Read it while you listen, and correct names, numbers and dates before you rely on it.
If the chat transcript is the problem rather than a recorder, the steps differ, and the question on why WhatsApp voice message transcripts fail covers them in full. For the wider subject, see our transcription overview, or the question on how to transcribe voice messages from other apps.
