How do you learn touch typing in Arabic?
Learn Arabic touch typing the same way as English: use the Arabic layout your computer already has, learn the home-row letters first, and practice in short daily sessions with your eyes on the text. A 2024 study of 30 students reported that learners reached proficiency within three sessions, but it was small and had no control group.

Learn Arabic touch typing the way you would learn it in English. Use the Arabic layout your computer already has, learn the home row first, and practice in short daily sessions while your eyes stay on the text. The method is the same as for English. What changes is the layout you practice on, and that is the first decision.
Start with the Arabic layout your computer already has
Microsoft lists Arabic (101) as a Windows keyboard layout, with the identifier 00000401, introduced before Windows XP 1. Before you practice, compare the key positions with the on-screen keyboard on your computer.
We did not check the Arabic layouts on a Mac for this page. Use the keyboard viewer on your Mac to confirm the key positions before you build a practice routine around them.
Use touch typing, with the home row first
Touch typing means each finger has its own keys, and you type without looking. Touch typists practice finger movements so that they can enter text without looking at the keyboard 2. In a copying study, touch typists spent about 20 percent of their time looking at the keyboard, against 40 percent for typists without training 3 4. Those figures come from a study of typing in general, not of Arabic typists.
Learn the home-row letters of the Arabic layout first, then add the rows above and below. The home row is the same idea as in English: your fingers rest on the middle row and reach for other keys without moving your hands.
What a 2024 study of Arabic learners found
A 2024 study used 30 students from one university 5. The study reports that typing speed rose from 12 to 25 words per minute, and accuracy from 55 to 85 percent 6. The authors say the mnemonic approach enabled students to reach proficiency within three sessions 7.
Treat that as early evidence. It is one study at one institution, with no control group, so the before-and-after design cannot show that the method caused the gain rather than the practice itself. Use it as a reason to try the approach, not as a timeline you are guaranteed.
A practice plan that works for most learners
- Add the Arabic keyboard in your system's language settings, and choose the layout you saw in Microsoft's list.
- Practice the home-row letters every day, with a chart of the key positions beside you until your fingers know them.
- Keep sessions to about 15 minutes, and log your speed and accuracy each time. For a timeline in English, see how long it takes to learn touch typing.
- Add the harder letters, numbers and punctuation once the home row feels steady.
- When you mix Arabic and English, switch layouts on purpose, so English words do not go into the Arabic layout.
The guide to touch typing covers the method in full, including finger placement and posture.
It depends on what you need the typing for
- If you mostly dictate, typing practice matters less. Our Arabic guide explains the dictation options and their accuracy.
- If you write mixed Arabic and English all day, practice English touch typing alongside Arabic, so both feel automatic.
- If the text comes out in the wrong order around numbers, the problem is display, not typing skill. The question on why dictated Arabic text looks backwards explains it.
