How do you learn touch typing in Russian?
Learn touch typing on the standard Russian layout, ЙЦУКЕН (JCUKEN), using the same finger rules you would use for English: each finger has a home position and returns to it after each key. Add Russian to your system, practise with a trainer that uses ЙЦУКЕН, and keep your eyes on the screen. We found no study that measures touch typing on a Cyrillic layout, so the research below comes from English typing.

Learn touch typing in Russian by practising on the standard Russian layout, ЙЦУКЕН, and by following the finger rules that apply to any layout. Touch typing trains your hands to the keys, and on any layout the work is learning which letter sits on which key. Pick the standard layout first, so that the trainer, the keyboard and the letter positions you learn all match.
Learn the standard ЙЦУКЕН layout
JCUKEN, written ЙЦУКЕН in Cyrillic, is the main keyboard layout for the Russian language on computers and typewriters 1. It replaced the older JIUKEN layout, which had been the main layout before, in 1953 2. Microsoft's table of Windows keyboard layouts lists the Russian layout with the keyboard identifier 00000419 3, so you can check which one your system has.
Some learners start with a phonetic layout, which maps each Cyrillic letter to a Latin key with a similar sound. Wikipedia describes these layouts as alternatives in which Cyrillic letters correspond to similar-sounding Latin letters in QWERTY and other layouts 4. A phonetic layout follows sound, so its letter positions do not match the standard Russian keyboard. If you plan to type Russian all day, choose ЙЦУКЕН from the start rather than learning two layouts.
Touch typing rules carry over, but the research is English only
Touch typing assigns each key to one finger, and each finger has a home position in the middle row to which it returns after a key 5. Those rules concern the hands and the keys, not the alphabet, so they should apply to Russian. That is an inference from how touch typing works, not a measured result. We found no study that tests touch typing on a Cyrillic layout.
The English research does show how long the skill takes. The authors of a 2016 study say touch typing can be learned quickly but needs deliberate training of hundreds of hours to reach the rates reported in the literature 6. Plan for a course of regular practice, not one session.
The reason to learn it is eyes on the screen. In the same study, typists who had not learned touch typing spent about 40 percent of their copying time looking at the keyboard 7, while touch typists spent about 20 percent looking at it 8.
Steps to set up and practise
- On Windows 11, select Start, then Settings, then Time & language, then Language & region. Choose Add a language, search for Russian, and select it 9. Then check which keyboard layout Windows installed for Russian.
- Find each letter on your keyboard before you type it. Look at the layout on your own screen, not a printed chart from another layout.
- Choose a trainer that offers ЙЦУКЕН lessons, and confirm that the layout it uses matches the one you installed. A trainer on a different layout will teach the wrong letter positions.
- Practise in short daily sessions, and keep your eyes on the screen even when it slows you down. The aim is to type without looking at the keys, which is the skill that the deliberate training builds.
- Check your errors after each session. Note which letters you miss, then give those keys extra practice.
We did not verify the Mac steps for adding Russian, so check the input source menu on your own Mac. The menu names change between macOS versions.
It depends on your typing goal and your device
If you dictate much of your Russian, touch typing is a complement rather than a replacement. Voice typing for Russian is a separate skill with its own errors, and the question on Russian voice typing covers the case endings you need to check. For speed on the keyboard itself, the guide to touch typing explains the method in more depth.
If you already type Russian with a phonetic layout and it works for you, switching may cost more than it gains. Do not switch in the middle of a work deadline. Decide before you start the practice, and keep one layout for the whole course.
For learners who also study the home row and the QWERTY layout in English, the same finger rules apply. The question on touch typing finger placement and the question on how long touch typing takes to learn explain the English method. The question on touch typing in Arabic covers another non-Latin layout.
