Question · Dictation on Mac
Does Apple Dictation use AI?
Yes. Apple's newest Dictation model, in macOS 27, is an Apple Intelligence model, and Apple's published speech research uses neural networks, a form of machine learning. The sources we checked do not say that Dictation writes or rewrites your text.

Yes. Apple does not publish how its Dictation model is built, but its published speech research uses neural networks, which are a form of machine learning, and that is what most people mean by AI in speech recognition. The newer macOS 27 adds an Apple Intelligence model for some Macs 1. The sources we checked describe it as a better on-device speech model, not as a text writer, so Dictation does not rewrite your sentences as far as Apple's pages show.
Apple's speech research uses neural networks, but not published for Dictation
Apple's 2017 article on the "Hey Siri" detector describes the method. It says the detector "uses a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to convert the acoustic pattern of your voice at each instant into a probability distribution over speech sounds" 2. Apple's Dictation pages do not publish a technical paper on the Dictation model itself, and we did not find one. The Hey Siri article is the closest official description of the method we found, so it is the best evidence we have, but it describes a wake-word detector, not Dictation.
Apple's Mac Help says that in supported languages, Dictation adds certain punctuation automatically as you dictate 3. Where the model runs is a separate question, covered below.
macOS 27 adds an Apple Intelligence model for some Macs
Apple says its improved on-device Dictation model is available on Macs with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory 1. It is part of the Apple Intelligence family of features, and an Intel Mac, or an Apple silicon Mac that is older or has less memory, does not get it.
Apple's developer speech interface, SpeechAnalyzer, transcribes entirely on the device, but its language models must be downloaded first 4. That describes the developer interface, not the Dictation key, so check which one you are using.
Where the model runs matters more than the label
Whether a feature is labeled AI matters less than where your audio goes. On an Apple silicon Mac, Apple's Mac Help says that for general text Dictation, your voice inputs and transcripts are processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers 5. Apple's general position on on-device machine learning is that it benefits privacy, because the data for inference workloads stays on the device rather than on a server 6.
The server route still exists for some setups. Apple's 2017 article on Hey Siri says the audio reaches the Siri server only if the stages on the iPhone pass it on 7. Intel Macs and some languages send speech to Apple, as covered in the question on offline use. Check the route in Keyboard settings on your own Mac, because the route is set by your chip and your language, not by the AI label.
It depends: what counts as AI, and what it does with your words
Three cases need care:
- Speech recognition is AI. If you ask whether Dictation uses machine learning, the answer is yes, and it is the same kind of model used by other speech-to-text systems.
- Text rewriting is not shown. The sources we read describe Dictation as converting speech to text, with punctuation added. They do not say that Dictation rewrites, summarizes or improves your sentences with a language model. If a feature does that, Apple's pages should say so, and we did not find that statement.
- Newer macOS, newer model. The Apple Intelligence model is limited to some Macs, so the answer for an M1 or Intel Mac is different from the answer for an M3 Mac running macOS 27 1.
The overview of how Apple Dictation works puts these parts together, and it explains why the Keyboard settings route is the best check.
What to do if you want to know exactly what runs
- Open Apple menu > System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar.
- In the Dictation section, read where your dictation is processed. That status tells you whether the words stay on your Mac.
- Check your chip and memory in Apple menu > About This Mac if you want to know whether the macOS 27 model applies to you.
- If you need to know whether an app adds its own AI on top of Apple's speech model, read that app's privacy policy, because the built-in Dictation key does not show it.
Accuracy is a separate question from whether AI is involved. The question on whether Apple Dictation is any good covers the evidence.
