Question · Dictation software
What is the best voice to text app for notes?
For most notes, the best voice to text app is the dictation already on your phone or computer, because it costs nothing and works where you can type. Pay for an AI app such as Wispr Flow or Superwhisper only if you want automatic cleanup and the free tier is not enough. For a private journal, choose an app that keeps audio on the device, and check its storage setting before you dictate anything personal.

There is no single best app for notes, but the best place to start is the dictation that came with your device. Test it on a week of real notes first. Move to a paid AI dictation app only if the built-in tool leaves you fixing too much, and check where your audio goes before you use any app for a journal. This question belongs to our comparison of AI dictation apps.
Start with the dictation already on your device
For most notes, the built-in dictation on your computer or phone is enough. On a Mac, dictation works anywhere you can type, so you can use it in a note, a message or a document 1. On an iPhone, dictation is processed on the phone in many languages, and it needs no internet connection 2. The limit is the language list, so check that your language is on it before you rely on the feature.
Windows is less simple. Windows voice typing needs an internet connection 3, so notes you dictate offline need another option. The table below lists the choices that the facts in this guide support.
Speech is faster, so read the notes once before you rely on them
Speech gets words down much faster than typing, but it leaves more mistakes in the finished text. In a controlled phone study, speech made fewer errors while people entered text. In the final text, though, it left 1.30% uncorrected errors against 0.79% for the keyboard 4. That study used short messages and a 2016 recognizer, so current figures will differ. The pattern still matters: a note you dictated is a draft.
Read each note once before you act on it. Look hardest at names, dates, numbers and words such as "not" and "no", since one changed word can reverse a note's meaning. For a fuller routine, see how to dictate notes quickly, and for proofreading steps, see how to proofread dictated text.
An AI app is worth paying for only if its cleanup saves you time
An AI app adds a language model after recognition. The model can remove filler words, fix punctuation and tidy fragments, which is useful when a note is a list of half-sentences. The same ability has a cost. In the HyPoradise benchmark, a language model corrected words that were missing from the recognizer's candidate list, because it generates text rather than only choosing among candidates 5. A tidy sentence can therefore say something you did not say, so the cleanup needs the same check as any other draft.
Test the free tier before you pay. Wispr Flow's free plan allows 2,000 dictated words per week on desktop and 1,000 per week on mobile 6. Use that allowance to compare the cleanup on your own notes, not to run a heavy week of note-taking. Limits change, so read the pricing page on the day you decide. For a head-to-head view, see whether Wispr Flow is worth it.
For a private journal, check where the audio goes first
A journal holds the most personal notes you will dictate, so check privacy before features. Superwhisper's Free plan uses local Whisper models without AI processing, and the company says nothing you dictate leaves the device 7. That is a vendor statement, and this guide did not test the network traffic. The free plan also has no AI cleanup, so you get the words as you spoke them.
Aqua Voice works differently. Its privacy policy says that, for users with Privacy Mode turned off, it may store transcript data on its servers to improve the product 8. Turn on Privacy Mode before you dictate a personal entry, and read the full policy, because that section covers transcript data only. If the audio path matters more than the features, see is voice to text safe.
The options differ on privacy, cost and cleanup
| Option | Key fact | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in dictation on a Mac | Works anywhere you can type 1 | Check that your language is supported |
| Built-in dictation on an iPhone | Processed on the phone in many languages 2 | Only the languages Apple lists |
| Built-in voice typing on Windows | Needs an internet connection 3 | Notes written offline |
| Superwhisper Free | Local Whisper models, no AI processing 7 | No AI cleanup on the free plan |
| Wispr Flow Free | 2,000 dictated words a week on desktop 6 | Weekly word limit |
| Aqua Voice | Transcripts may be stored unless Privacy Mode is on 8 | Turn on Privacy Mode for personal notes |
Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows. Its prices are on the pricing page, not in this answer. For how on-device dictation works on a Mac, see offline dictation on Mac.
Choose by testing one week of notes
Vendor pages cannot tell you how much a tool will fix in your own writing, so run a short test.
- Dictate every note for one week with the built-in tool on your device, and keep the drafts.
- Note how long you spend fixing each one, and whether the fixes are small (punctuation, a stray filler word) or large (rewording, a changed meaning).
- If the fixes are small, stop there. The free tool is enough.
- If the fixes are large, test one AI app's free tier on the same kind of notes, and compare the fixing time with your first week.
- For a journal or any private entry, use an app that keeps audio on the device, and check its storage setting before your first entry.
The fixing time is the number to compare, not the speed of speaking. A fast draft that needs long corrections is not a faster note. If you have no interest in AI cleanup at all, see whether there is a dictation app without AI. For the wider choice, see the best dictation software.
