Can you use voice typing to practice pronunciation?
Partly. Voice typing can show you where the recognizer heard something other than what you meant, which is a useful clue. General voice typing is built to look past mispronunciations, so a trainer that flags errors is the better tool for pronunciation.

Partly. Voice typing writes down what the recognizer heard, so a gap between what you said and what appears on the screen is a clue about your sounds. The catch is that general recognizers are designed to ignore small pronunciation errors, so a correct-looking result does not prove your pronunciation is right. For a real check, use a tool built to flag errors. This question is the speaking side of our guide to dictation for language learning, which mostly covers listening and writing.
General voice typing is built to look past mispronunciation
A book chapter on pronunciation training explains the design. It says that an ASR system, such as those on Siri or Alexa, treats mispronunciations as noise, because its goal is to transcribe the sounds the speaker intended 1. So a device that writes the word you meant has done its job, even if your vowel or stress was off. That is useful for dictation, but a clean result on the screen does not confirm your pronunciation.
Dedicated trainers with explicit feedback do better
The strongest evidence for a pronunciation tool comes from a 2025 controlled study of an automatic pronunciation trainer. The trainer gave explicit corrective feedback on three Arabic phrases. Twenty-six American college students took part 2. The group that used the trainer scored significantly better on the posttest than the control group 3.
That study had only 26 students and one language 2, and it tested a dedicated teaching tool, not a general dictation app. It shows that explicit feedback can help. It does not show that any voice typing will.
Accent bias can mark correct speech as wrong
A recognizer can mishear a pronunciation that is correct for a different English. A 2024 analysis of OpenAI's Whisper speech model found better performance on North American English accents than on British and Irish English accents 4. If you practice a British or Irish accent, a recognizer that performs better on North American accents may mark correct sounds as errors.
Research on foreign-accented speech shows the gap can be narrowed. A 2007 study found that the best combination of pronunciation modeling and acoustic adaptation cut word error rate by 46 to 71 percent relative 5. Those are research systems, not the dictation on your phone, so do not expect the same gains from a consumer app.
How to run a voice typing check
- Set one language to the one you are learning. On a Mac, Apple's Mac Help describes going to Keyboard settings, opening Dictation, clicking the Edit button next to Languages, and selecting a language and region 6.
- Use one language at a time. Apple describes setting up Dictation for multiple languages and switching between them as needed 7. A mixed sentence gives a messy result that you cannot read.
- Speak one sentence slowly, as you would to a listener, and read the output.
- Mark each word that differs from what you said.
- Change one sound in a marked word, such as a vowel or a stressed syllable, and say it again. If the output changes to the word you meant, the recognizer heard the difference.
- Check the word in a dictionary with audio. If the dictionary pronunciation matches yours and the recognizer still rejects it, the error is probably the recognizer's.
When voice typing is not enough
Voice typing shows that a word came out differently. It cannot tell you whether your tongue, stress or rhythm caused the difference. For that, use a trainer that flags the specific sound, or a teacher who listens to you speak.
Language coverage is also a limit. On iPhone, Apple says dictation may not be available in all languages or in all countries or regions 8. Confirm your language is listed before you build a habit around it.
What to do
Use voice typing as a quick check on a sentence you already know, and pair it with speaking practice and feedback from a listener. Our guide on speech recognition accents covers accent effects in more detail, and our question on why dictation does not understand my accent covers the common fixes.
