How do you practice dictation in English?
Practice English dictation in short sessions most days. Write one or two sentences from audio that has a transcript, compare your version with the original, and dictate the same passage again a day or two later. Choose English audio slightly above your level, and set your device to the English variant the speaker uses.

Practice English dictation in short sessions, most days, rather than long sessions now and then. Each session is a loop: listen to one segment, write it, compare with the original, then replay the gaps. Come back to the same passage later, and choose audio that is a little harder than what you already understand. The evidence for each step is indirect, but the routine follows from how dictation works and from what the research on practice timing suggests.
Revisit each passage after a gap, not all in one sitting
Spaced practice is a well-tested idea in memory research. A 2006 review by Cepeda and colleagues found that the gap between study sessions that gave the best retention grew as the retention period grew 1. That review covered verbal recall tasks, not dictation. We use it as a reason to revisit a passage after a gap, not as a schedule to copy exactly.
In practice, this means dictating a passage today, dictating it again a day or two later, and then again after a longer gap. Keep the sessions short enough that you can finish them on a busy day.
Choose English audio slightly above your level
The input hypothesis says learners progress from input slightly more advanced than their current level, which Krashen called i+1 2. The level is not measured in numbers, so use a practical check. If you miss most words on the first listen, the audio is too hard, so try a slower speaker or a shorter clip. If you write it perfectly, it is too easy.
Set the English variant that matches the speaker
Speech tools handle English variants differently, so the setting matters. On a Mac, Apple lists 15 English language and regional variants for dictation 3. Apple's Mac Help describes changing the language in Keyboard settings: open Dictation, click the Edit button next to Languages, and select a language and region 4. Check the menu names on your own macOS version, because they can change between releases.
Pick the variant that matches the speaker in your audio. If you are unsure, choose the spelling your teacher or exam uses, so that your practice matches what you will be marked on.
A daily routine
- Pick a clip with a transcript. If you only have audio, you can make a rough transcript with our free audio to text tool. Correct it by ear before you use it, because a recognizer can mishear words and you would then practice the wrong spelling.
- Play one sentence and write it down without looking at the text.
- Replay the segment and write any words you missed.
- Compare with the original and label each error as a spelling error, a missing word, a wrong ending or tense, or a homophone.
- Keep a list of the words you got wrong. Review it at the start of the next session.
- Dictate the same passage again a day or two later, and note how many errors remain.
The routine is our suggestion. We found no study that compared it with other daily routines.
Students and teachers score errors differently
If you are a student in an English class, your teacher may read the passage aloud and score what you write. The Hong Kong Education Bureau's handbook says dictation is more than a testing device, and that it helps teachers understand how learners are progressing 5. The same handbook says marks should not be deducted for repeated mistakes 6, because misspelling the same word several times does not show the same weakness as several different errors.
Teachers and parents can use the same logic. Track error types across sessions, and you will see whether a student needs spelling practice, slower audio or more listening.
It depends on your age and your accent
Young learners need different words and passages from adults. For a word list for children, see our page on English dictation words for kids. If you speak English with a strong accent, a recognizer may mishear you, so read our page on English voice typing for non-native speakers before you use voice typing as a check.
