What are good Hindi dictation words without matra?
Good words are those where every letter is a consonant with its inherent vowel, or an independent vowel letter, with no vowel sign attached. Examples include कमल, जल, घर, सच and नमक. Leave halant words for later, and check the spoken form, because a final vowel is sometimes not pronounced.

Good Hindi dictation words without matra are words in which every consonant carries only its inherent vowel. The Unicode Standard describes the Devanagari script this way, so a word with no vowel sign attached is one that a child can write from the consonant letters alone. Examples are कमल, नमक, जल, घर, सच and कलम. Start with short words like these, move to words with a halant once the rule is clear, and remember that the spoken word may not end with the vowel you write.
Words with no matra are built from bare consonants
Unicode says the Brahmic scripts are abugidas, in which most symbols stand for a consonant plus an inherent vowel, usually the sound a 1. A matra is the sign written on a consonant to show a different vowel. Unicode calls these dependent vowels, and says they are generally referred to as matras in Sanskrit 2.
So a word has no matra when none of its letters carries a vowel sign. Independent vowel letters such as अ are letters in their own right, not matras, so a word like अब also has no matra. The table gives examples you can check against the rule.
| Word | Meaning | Letters | Matra? |
|---|---|---|---|
| कमल | lotus | क म ल | No |
| नमक | salt | न म क | No |
| कलम | pen | क ल म | No |
| जल | water | ज ल | No |
| घर | home | घ र | No |
| सच | truth | स च | No |
| तब | then | त ब | No |
| अब | now | अ ब | No |
Check the table against the letters before you use it in class, because a single vowel sign changes the word. Look at every letter in the word, not only the first one.
Leave halant words for later
A halant, or virama, removes the inherent vowel from a consonant. Unicode says that in Hindi the word hal names the character itself, and halant refers to the consonant whose inherent vowel is suppressed 3. Words such as पत्र (letter) contain a halant, so they are harder than the words above and belong later in the list.
A halant changes how the word is written, so a child who has not yet learned the sign will struggle with it. Introduce halant words once the child can write the bare-consonant words without help.
Check the spoken form before you dictate
Hindi speech does not always pronounce the inherent vowel. The Wikipedia article on schwa deletion in Indo-Aryan languages gives the Sanskrit word for Veda as an example, and says its final schwa is deleted in both Hindi and Bengali 4. The article is a reference summary, and it does not measure how often this happens in classrooms, but it shows why the spoken word can end without the vowel you write.
In a dictation test, that means the child must write the letters you expect, even if the word sounds as if it ends in a consonant. Say the word in your normal classroom voice, and check the spelling against the printed word before the test, not after.
We did not find a checked word list for UKG
We did not find a published, checked list of Hindi dictation words for UKG that we could cite, so the examples above are built from the script's rules, not from a school syllabus. Match them to the letters your class has taught, and to the sounds the children have practised. If your school has a Hindi dictation list, use it, and check each word against the rule before you dictate it.
What to do
- Start with two- and three-letter words with no halant, such as घर, जल and सच.
- Move to three-letter words with no vowel sign, such as कमल, नमक and कलम.
- Add a halant word once the child can write the bare-consonant words without help.
- Score errors by type, such as a missed letter or a wrong consonant, and track which words cause trouble.
- Repeat missed words in a later session, rather than in the same sitting.
The Hong Kong handbook is written for English, not Hindi, but its advice on marking applies here too: a child who makes the same error several times has one weakness, so do not take marks off for each repeat 5.
