Question · Languages and accents
What is the best dictation app for learning a language?
For listening and spelling, use a listen-and-type exercise that plays audio, lets you replay it and checks what you type. For pronunciation, use built-in speech to text in the language you are learning. No single app is best for every language, so first check that the tool supports your language and region.

There is no single best dictation app for every language. The answer depends on what you are practicing. For listening and spelling, use a listen-and-type exercise: an app or site that plays audio, lets you replay it, and checks what you typed. For pronunciation, use speech to text in the language you are learning, which writes what you say, so you can see where a recognizer heard something different. Before you choose either, confirm that the tool supports your language and region, because support varies by feature and by country.
Listen-and-type exercises train listening and spelling
A listen-and-type exercise is built for dictation practice. One example from our research is Lingua's English dictation page, which says the speaker reads each sentence twice, once at normal speed and then at a slower speed for easier writing 1. The loop of listening, writing and checking is the one the dictation method depends on.
We describe one site as an example, not as a recommendation for every learner. Other exercises may use other formats, so check whether the audio has a transcript, whether you can replay it, and whether the audio uses the accent you will hear in real life.
Speech tools check pronunciation, with accent limits
Speech to text writes what you say. You speak a sentence in your target language, and the output shows what the recognizer heard. A mismatch is a clue to check, but it is not proof that your pronunciation is wrong. A 2024 analysis of OpenAI's Whisper speech model found better performance on North American English accents than on British and Irish English accents 2. So a correct British pronunciation can be marked wrong by a tool that performs better on another accent.
| Kind of tool | What it is best for | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Listen-and-type exercise | Listening and spelling, with the text available to check | Limited to the audio on the site |
| Built-in speech to text | Seeing what a recognizer heard when you speak | Accent and language support vary, and it does not teach spelling |
| Dedicated dictation app | Writing longer text by voice in the language you use at work | Depends on the language list and the platform |
Check that your language is listed first
Support is the first thing to check. On an iPhone, Apple says Dictation may not be available in all languages or in all countries or regions 3. On a Mac, you change the language in Keyboard settings: open Dictation, click Edit next to Languages, and select a language 4. For Hindi, two tools list it. Google's Docs help page lists Hindi among the languages and accents that voice typing works in 5, and Apple's iOS and iPadOS feature page lists Hindi (India) in its general Dictation section 6.
If your language is not on the list, the built-in tools will not help you practice it. Choose a listen-and-type exercise for that language, or a dedicated tool that supports it.
How to choose, step by step
- Confirm the language and region are listed on the tool's own page, not only on a general list.
- Pick a listening exercise with audio you can replay and a transcript you can check against.
- Use speech to text for pronunciation, with one language set at a time.
- Read each mismatch by ear. Replay the word in a dictionary with audio, and decide whether the error is yours or the recognizer's.
- Repeat the sentences you missed a day or two later.
When the built-in tools are enough
For most learners, the built-in tools on a phone or computer are enough, as long as the language is listed. You do not need a separate app to see what a recognizer heard. A dedicated app is worth considering when you need a structured course, when your language is missing from the built-in list, or when you want to write long text by voice in the language.
Yap, which we make, runs its dictation on the device on Mac and Windows, so it is one option for speech to text. For listen-and-type practice, a site built for that purpose is a better fit. Our dictation in the browser is a quick way to try speech to text without installing anything.

Our overview of dictation languages and accents covers the language lists on each device. Terms used here are defined in our glossary entries for dictation, voice typing and accent.
