How do you fix Dragon failing to launch the UI Automation server?
We could not find a Nuance document that explains the UI Automation server error, and we could not confirm error code 166 from a Nuance source. In a 2017 report, a repair from the installer fixed the error after turning User Account Control on alone did not. Try a repair of your Dragon installation first, restart, then check the other causes below.

When Dragon shows "Failed to launch UI Automation server", it has not started the component that lets it work with other programs. The fix we can document is a repair of the Dragon installation, and a 2017 user found that the error followed a Windows update. Nuance's own explanation of the message was not available to us when we checked, and we did not find error code 166 in any Nuance source, so do not rely on that number to identify the problem.
The message is a launch failure, and its cause is not confirmed
The clearest report we found is a Microsoft Q&A post from 2017. It describes the message appearing after an update: "After the latest Windows 10 update, I started getting the message" 1. That post is about Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12, which became available as a download in August 2012 2, not Dragon 16. A single report is a lead, not a diagnosis, and it does not say what in the update caused the error.
Start with a repair of the installation
The poster's fix was a repair from the installer: "For me, I had to run a repair using my installation media" 3. If your Dragon installer offers a Repair option, use it. If it does not, reinstall from the Dragon download, and keep your serial number ready.
These are the steps, in order:
- Write down when the error started and whether a Windows update was installed just before. The 2017 report ties the message to an update, so the timing is useful evidence for support.
- Run the repair described above, then restart the computer and try Dragon.
- Keep User Account Control on. The 2017 poster turned it back on, but that did not fix the problem 4.
- If it still fails, send Nuance support the exact message, the Dragon version, the Windows build and any log file you can find.
Turning UAC on is not always enough
Turning UAC back on did not solve the problem for the 2017 poster. They wrote that "Dragon still did not work for me after turning UAC back on" 4, which is why the repair step matters. If UAC is already on, the repair is the next step, not more UAC changes.
Check whether elevation is part of the problem
Dragon's separate warning about elevated mode is a different problem. Nuance's guide says that administrator rights are not required to use Dragon after installation 5, and a profile created while logged in as an administrator may be hidden from users with restricted privileges 6. If Dragon only fails when you start it with Run as administrator, read the question on why Dragon should not run in elevated mode before you try any other fix.
It depends on your Dragon version and your PC
The 2017 report concerns Dragon 12 on Windows 10. Before you blame an update, check that your PC meets the requirements for your Dragon version. Nuance lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 among the supported systems for Dragon Professional 16 7. On a managed PC, your administrator may control the installation and the repair, so ask them before you change system settings. If your copy has a user profile that the error seems to tie to, back it up first, using the steps in the question on the Dragon user profile.
If the message is not the only problem, and Dragon will not start or stops responding, see why Dragon NaturallySpeaking is not working. The glossary entry for Dragon NaturallySpeaking explains which product versions and editions exist, which helps when you are checking which installer to use.
