Question · Dictation software
Does Dragon NaturallySpeaking use AI?
Yes, in the sense that matters for dictation. Dragon's Windows speech engine is built on Nuance Deep Learning technology, which is a form of artificial intelligence. Nuance's pages describe the AI as speech recognition, and we found no sign that it rewrites your text, and the generative AI Microsoft markets under the Dragon name is aimed at healthcare.

Yes. Dragon's speech engine is a deep learning model, which is a kind of artificial intelligence. Nuance describes the current Windows engine as "powered by Nuance Deep Learning technology" 1. What it does not appear to do is rewrite your sentences afterward, and that difference matters when you compare it with newer AI dictation apps. The Dragon guide covers the product's background.
The engine is deep learning, which is a kind of AI
Deep learning means training a neural network on large amounts of audio and text, so it can map sound to words. That is what "AI" means for dictation, and it is the same family of technology used in modern built-in recognizers. Google's 2019 example shows the change clearly. It announced "an end-to-end, all-neural, on-device speech recognizer" to power speech input in Gboard 2.
Nuance's 2016 announcement for version 15 said its deep learning technology delivers upwards of 24 percent greater accuracy 3. That is the vendor's own figure, and we found no independent test of it, so read it as a claim rather than a measurement.
Nuance describes the desktop AI as recognition, not rewriting
Nuance's pages describe the recognition engine. We read the Dragon Professional pages and found no statement that the Windows desktop product sends your dictation through a language model to rewrite, summarize or polish it. That is a finding from what Nuance publishes, not proof that no such feature exists, so check the release notes for the version you plan to buy.
The practical result is that Dragon's cleanup is your job. Nuance's guidelines tell users to speak punctuation and to pause briefly before and after dictating it 4. Some newer AI apps add punctuation and remove filler words for you. Dragon's approach is more manual, and the AI dictation apps guide compares the two styles in full.
The generative AI under the Dragon name is for healthcare
Microsoft announced Dragon Copilot on 3 March 2025 as the healthcare industry's first unified voice AI assistant 5. It is a clinical product. If you searched for Dragon and AI and found medical results, this is what they describe. For dictation in clinics, read medical dictation software before you assume the desktop product fits.
Microsoft's announcement does not mention the Windows desktop product, so do not read a healthcare AI claim as a description of the software on your desk.
It depends on what you want the AI to do
| If you want | Dragon Professional | Newer AI dictation apps |
|---|---|---|
| Accurate recognition on Windows | Deep learning engine. The vendor's accuracy figure is for version 15 (2016) 3, and we found no independent test | Varies by app, so test it on your own text |
| Automatic punctuation | Spoken punctuation, with pauses | Often added automatically, so check the setting |
| Cleanup of filler words | Not described by Nuance for the desktop product | Some apps promise it, so test the claim |
| Local processing | Internet documented for activation and installation 6 | Depends on the app and its settings |
For the cloud question specifically, is AI dictation better than Dragon gives the comparison, and what AI dictation means explains the terms.
How to test whether a dictation app uses AI for cleanup
- Dictate one sentence with a filler word such as "um", in your usual app, without saying any punctuation.
- Look at the result. Did the app add commas and capital letters, or remove the filler, or did it type exactly what you said?
- Repeat it in Dragon with the same sentence, and speak the punctuation as Nuance advises. Count the extra steps.
- Check where the audio goes. A cloud AI step can send your text to a server, so read the privacy page before you dictate anything sensitive. Is voice to text safe explains the questions to ask.
If the app you try does clean up your text, that cleanup is a second AI step on top of recognition. Decide whether you want it, because it can change your wording as well as your punctuation.
