Question · Dictation software
Does Microsoft own Dragon NaturallySpeaking?
Yes, indirectly. Microsoft completed its purchase of Nuance Communications in March 2022, and Nuance develops and sells Dragon, so Microsoft owns the company behind Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Nuance still sells the Windows product, now named Dragon Professional, and Microsoft has not announced a change to it that we could find.

Yes, but not directly. Microsoft does not sell the desktop Dragon under its own name. It owns Nuance Communications, the company that develops and sells Dragon, and it has owned Nuance since March 2022 1. The desktop Windows product is sold by Nuance as Dragon Professional, and the question you are really asking is whether Microsoft controls that company. It does.
If you searched "Dragon NaturallySpeaking by Nuance", you found the right seller. The name on the box and the name on the store page are both Nuance's. The older name is a legacy. For how the product changed hands before Microsoft, read the full history of Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
Microsoft owns Dragon through Nuance, not as a separate brand
The ownership runs in a chain. Dragon Systems released NaturallySpeaking in 1997 2. In 2001, the Dragon line was part of the sale of Lernout and Hauspie's speech assets to ScanSoft 3. ScanSoft later took the Nuance name 4, and Microsoft bought the resulting company in 2022. Each step passed the product along inside a larger company.
Microsoft's announcement of the 2022 deal does not mention Dragon. The link comes from Nuance being the developer, so the answer is a matter of corporate structure, not of a Microsoft product line. Nuance's own US store page makes the relationship visible. Its footer carries two copyright notices, one for Microsoft and one for Nuance Communications, Inc. 5. The page is Nuance's, and its footer also carries a Microsoft copyright notice.
Two terms do the work here. A subsidiary is a company that another company owns. Nuance is one, and Dragon is one of its products. A brand is the name customers see. Dragon is still a Nuance brand, which is why you buy it from Nuance and see Nuance on the license.
Nuance still sells Dragon, and Microsoft's Dragon-based products serve other markets
You can still buy Nuance products from its store. Its US menu lists Dragon Legal, Dragon Law Enforcement and Dragon Professional Anywhere, and it does not list Dragon Home or Dragon Premium 6. A reseller says that Nuance and Microsoft did not create a Dragon Home version 16 7. We found no Nuance statement with the same wording, so treat that as the reseller's account.
Microsoft has put the Dragon name into healthcare. Its 2025 announcement says that Dragon Copilot combines and extends Dragon Medical One and DAX Copilot 8. That is a separate clinical product. It does not tell you what happens to the desktop Windows edition, which is a different product line.
Ownership did not cause the end of the Mac version. Nuance stopped updates for Dragon Professional Individual for Mac after 22 October 2018 9, before the acquisition closed. If you need a Mac, the ownership change is not the reason, and the Dragon for Mac page explains what your options are.
What ownership means for a buyer
Ownership tells you who to contact and whose terms you accept. It does not tell you the price, the features or the future of a given edition. Those depend on the edition, the seller and the license, and the sources we checked do not show a change to the Windows Dragon Professional license since the acquisition. We found no Microsoft announcement that changes it.
The practical points are these.
- Buy from Nuance or an authorized seller. Resellers sell older editions and listings that no longer match Nuance's store.
- Read the support and license terms for the exact edition. A Microsoft-owned company may still set those terms differently for each product.
- Do not assume the healthcare line applies to you. If you dictate clinical notes, read medical dictation software before you compare Dragon Medical One with the desktop product.
- Check the history if a seller describes an edition you cannot find. Many old boxes and download pages refer to editions that are no longer sold new.
Other questions people ask next
People who ask about ownership usually want to know whether the product still exists. Is Dragon NaturallySpeaking discontinued? answers that by edition. If you are working out whether Microsoft offers something similar for free, does Microsoft have dictation software? covers Windows voice typing, Voice Access and Word's Dictate. If you are comparing Dragon with its predecessor, Dragon Dictate and Dragon NaturallySpeaking explains the difference.
The short version is this. Microsoft owns the company, Nuance sells the product, and the Windows edition is what you buy. The company that owns the product is often less important to you than the terms of the edition you are about to buy.
