Question · Dictation software
Is Dragon NaturallySpeaking worth it?
Dragon Professional is worth paying for if you use Windows, dictate for hours a week, and need detailed voice commands or specialist vocabulary. A 2023 review priced it at $699 for a one-time license, which is expensive, and it does not run on a Mac. If the free built-in tools cover your work, or you need the app to stop listening between dictations, test those first.

Dragon is worth it for a narrow group: Windows users who dictate for long stretches, and who need more control or more specialist vocabulary than the free tools give. For light use, or for a Mac, the price is hard to justify. The honest test is to run the free tool and Dragon on the same text and count what you have to fix. The Dragon guide covers the product, and our full comparison covers the alternatives.
It is worth it for heavy Windows dictation
The most useful independent verdict we could read is from TechRadar's 2023 review. It concluded that Dragon Professional 16 "is an effective speech-to-text software for everyday use" 1. That is one reviewer's judgment, not a measurement, but it matches what Dragon is for.
The reasons to pay are depth rather than basic accuracy. Dragon has a custom vocabulary for names, product codes and technical terms, and it supports more voice commands for editing and moving the pointer. If your work depends on those words, that is the feature to test first. The how-to guide for Dragon explains how to set it up.
The price is high, and the Mac version is not an option
TechRadar gave Dragon Professional 16 as a one-time fee of $699 for each license 2. That was the 2023 review price. Nuance's own product page showed no price when we checked it in 2026 3, so get the current quote before you plan a budget.
Dragon does not run on a Mac. The Mac version ended in 2018 4, as the discontinued question explains. A Mac user should compare the free dictation software guide before anything else.
TechRadar also lists three drawbacks in its reasons to avoid: "Consumes computing resources - Expensive - Steep learning curve" 5. The learning curve is the one to plan for, because the custom words and commands take time to build.
The accuracy evidence is old, or from a medical product
Nuance's own accuracy claims come with no test conditions, so we do not use them as evidence. The independent study we found is from 2000. It tested physicians dictating medical reports, and Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical Suite 3.0 had a vocabulary error rate of 14.1 to 15.2 percent 6. That is decades-old software, so it shows where Dragon started, not what version 16 does today.
The most recent independent number we found is from a 2025 pilot of Dragon Medical One, which is a medical product. Its mean word error rate was 1.54 percent, counting all errors 7. The study used a different error measure from the 2000 study, and neither product is the Windows desktop software. The two numbers cannot be compared with each other or with your own result.
Privacy: Dragon records what it hears unless you stop it
Nuance's dictation guidelines say that, unless you tell Dragon to stop listening, it records everything it hears, including a phone call or a coworker's talk 8. In an open office or a clinic, that matters. If the app will run all day, you need a way to stop it between dictations. Is voice to text safe covers the wider questions.
Cloud subscriptions have their own end dates
If a seller offers Dragon Professional Anywhere, the cloud edition, check the end-of-life date for the version you would get. Nuance's life cycle table gives August 31, 2026 as the end-of-life date for Dragon Professional Anywhere 2021.1 9. Get the date in writing before you pay for a subscription. Dragon Professional Anywhere explains the edition.
What reviews and forum posts we could not use
We looked for Reddit threads about Dragon and did not find one we could open and cite. Several review sites and competitor pages publish scores and comparisons, but we could not read a dated, representative set of user reviews, so we do not use them as evidence. Competitor pages in particular have a stake in the answer. The one independent review we could read is from 2023, so check it against what you see today.
What to do: a one-week test on your own text
- Set your baseline. Dictate a page of your real writing into the app you use most, using the built-in tool, and count the words you have to correct.
- Try Dragon in trial mode. If you skip activation on first start, Dragon 16.1 allows five launches in Trial mode before you must activate 10. Add your names and technical words to the custom vocabulary first.
- Dictate the same page again and count the corrections, and the minutes spent on them, not just the words you spoke.
- Test without a connection. Disconnect from the internet and dictate a third page. Nuance documents internet use for activation and installation but does not say whether dictation itself needs a connection, so an offline check on your own machine is the most direct test.
- Buy only if the corrections fall by enough to repay the license over the time you will use it. If they do not, the free tool is the better choice.
If you want another paid option to compare, is Wispr Flow worth it uses the same test, and how much dictation software costs lists the prices we checked. For a free route, the free alternative to Dragon explains what you give up.
Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows, so it is one of the options in this test. Run the same five steps on it, and see the download page to try it. Its prices are on the pricing page.
