VoiceInk vs Superwhisper: which is better?
On a Mac, VoiceInk is the better value: it costs a one-time $25 to $49, starts with a local model and has public source code. Superwhisper is the better choice if you also need Windows, Android or a larger library of cloud models, and it costs more.

For Mac only, choose VoiceInk. For several devices, choose Superwhisper. Both apps type what you say into any application and both can run Whisper and Parakeet on the Mac itself. The real differences are price, platforms and what each app does before you change a setting. This comparison uses each maker's own pages as read on October 27, 2026. VoiceInk costs far less, and Superwhisper reaches more devices
| VoiceInk | Superwhisper | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $25 for one Mac 1, $49 for three 2, paid once | $84.99 a year 3 or $249.99 once 4 |
| Platforms | Mac; the iPhone app is a separate license 5 | Unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus an iPhone and an Android phone, on one Pro license 6 |
| Source code | Public, GPL v3 7 | Closed |
| Starting model | Local, Parakeet V3 8 | Cloud, until you pick a local model 9 |
| Free option | 7-day trial 10, or build from source | Unlimited local Whisper models 11 |
Superwhisper's lifetime license costs about 5.1 times VoiceInk's largest plan 12. That is not a like-for-like gap: Superwhisper's one license covers Windows and phones too, and its subscription includes cloud models, where VoiceInk asks you to bring your own API key and pay the provider yourself 13. If you only dictate on one Mac with local models, you are paying for devices you do not use.
The speech models are close, with one catch on the free tier
Both run the same families locally. VoiceInk lists Parakeet, Nemotron, Whisper, Cohere Transcribe, SenseVoice and Apple Speech 14. Superwhisper made Parakeet available to Pro users in July 2025 15, and its documentation recommends Cohere Transcribe or Parakeet Multilanguage as the local model 16.
The catch is where each line is drawn. Superwhisper's Parakeet and Cohere Transcribe models need the paid Pro plan 17, while its free plan keeps to Whisper models 18. In VoiceInk, the default Parakeet V3 comes with the license or trial. Parakeet V3 held up better than Whisper in noise and on accents in our tests: 7.85 percent against 13.92 percent errors in loud cafe babble 19 20. Both apps also run Whisper, so the free Superwhisper plan is a fair Whisper test before you pay anyone. Our question on which VoiceInk model to use has the details.
Privacy defaults differ, but both can stay fully local
VoiceInk starts local and its FAQ says transcription is processed on your Mac 21. Superwhisper's cloud default means audio goes to its proxy, is transcribed and comes back 22, unless you switch to a local model. Superwhisper says audio never leaves the device with an on-device model 23, so a local setup in either app keeps audio at home.
Both apps send text to an AI model if you turn on rewriting. VoiceInk's AI enhancement sends the transcribed text and any context you enable to the provider you chose 24. Check each Mode before dictating anything confidential. Superwhisper's own privacy detail and the question on whether Superwhisper works offline cover its side.
When Superwhisper is the better choice
- You use Windows or Android. VoiceInk has no Windows or Android app, while Superwhisper runs natively on Windows 10 and 11 under the same license 25. Android dictation in Superwhisper is cloud only 26.
- You want ready-made cloud models. Superwhisper's own S1 models, Deepgram, ElevenLabs and others come with the subscription 27. In VoiceInk you connect each provider with your own key.
- You want the broadest language reach in one place. Superwhisper says its cloud model and multilingual Whisper models cover more than 100 languages 28. See which languages VoiceInk supports for the other side.
- You like ready-made modes. Superwhisper ships Voice, Super, Message, Email, Note and Meeting modes 29, where VoiceInk gives you Modes you configure and trigger by app, website, spoken word or shortcut 30.
When VoiceInk is the better choice
- You have one Mac and want to pay once. $25 beats a yearly subscription from the second year onward.
- You want to read the code. The source is public, and you can build it yourself for free 31. The question on whether VoiceInk is open source covers the license.
- You want a local-first default with no account decision on day one.
What to do: try the free route in each
- Install VoiceInk with the 7-day trial and keep Parakeet V3, or build it from source.
- Install Superwhisper on its free plan and test Whisper on the same speech.
- Dictate your real work in both for a day, in your usual room.
- Choose VoiceInk if you stay on one Mac, and Superwhisper if you move between devices.
If you need Windows without a subscription, Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for Mac and Windows; see /pricing and the guide to dictation on Windows. Another comparison to read: VoiceInk vs Wispr Flow.
