How do you voice type in Russian?
You can voice type in Russian with Apple's Dictation on a Mac, which lists Russian (Russia), and with Windows 11 voice typing, which lists one Russian language. On the Mac, Russian is also on the on-device list, so it can run without an internet connection. Windows voice typing needs an internet connection.

Russian voice typing needs no third-party app. Both major desktop systems include it: turn on Dictation on a Mac, or start voice typing on Windows 11 with the Windows key and H. The steps differ by system, and so do the offline options, so choose the system first and then follow its steps.
Windows 11 lists Russian as one language
Windows 11 lists Russian as one language with no region in its name 1. Start it by pressing the Windows key and H together on a hardware keyboard 2, with the cursor in a text box.
Windows voice typing needs three things: a working microphone, an internet connection, and the cursor in a text box 3. If you are offline, Windows voice typing will not work in Russian or in any other language.
On a Mac, Russian works on the on-device list
Apple's main Dictation list for the Mac includes Russian (Russia) 4. Russian also appears on the on-device list 5, the list of languages that Dictation can run on the Mac itself. Check that Russian is on it on your own Mac before you rely on it offline.
To add Russian on a Mac:
- Open Keyboard settings, then select Dictation.
- Click Edit next to Languages, and select Russian (Russia) 6.
Apple's menu names can change between macOS versions, so use the names you see on your own screen if they differ.
Whisper's error rate for Russian is 5.6 percent on read speech
Whisper large-v2 had a word error rate of 5.6 percent for Russian on FLEURS, a benchmark of read sentences 7. The benchmark reads sentences aloud in a quiet setting, so expect more errors in conversation, with pauses, or in a noisy room.
The main source of error is grammar, not sound. Russian nouns take six grammatical cases 8. Each case has its own ending, so a recognizer can get the right stem and still pick the wrong ending. A wrong ending is a wrong word, and a spell checker may not catch it because the form is real.
What to check after you dictate
Read the Russian text once for endings, because endings are where dictation most often goes wrong. Focus on three places:
- Nouns after prepositions, where the case changes the ending.
- Adjectives that must agree with the noun in case, number and gender.
- Verb forms that depend on the subject.
Correct the first few errors, then note which ending the recognizer keeps getting wrong. You can dictate with the same pattern in later sessions and catch it sooner.
Which system to choose
The answer depends on whether you need offline dictation. On a Mac, Russian works on the on-device list, so you can dictate without an internet connection if your Mac is on that list. On Windows 11, voice typing needs the internet every time, so a Windows PC without a connection cannot dictate Russian with the built-in tool.
If you dictate in Russian and another language in the same text, switch languages between sentences rather than in the middle of one. The guide to multilingual dictation covers the switching options in more detail.
