Question · Dictation in your apps
Does Serenade still work for voice coding?
Serenade is still offered as a free download, but we could not confirm that it is maintained. The most recent commit on its public code repository is dated July 23, 2022, and we found no shutdown notice. Treat it as a tool to test on your own speech, not a dependable daily tool, until its own pages show recent updates.

The short answer is that Serenade can still be downloaded, but we could not confirm that anyone is maintaining it. Its documentation says the app is freely available for macOS, Windows and Linux 1, and its download page says it works across Mac, Windows and Linux 2. Availability is not the same as support, so the question that matters is whether the software is still being updated.
Serenade is still offered, but its newest public commit is from 2022
The main reason for doubt is the commit history. The most recent commit on the main branch of Serenade's public GitHub repository is dated July 23, 2022 3. We checked that history on October 17, 2026, and the date is still the latest one shown.
A recent download does not prove recent work. An app can keep running after its last commit, but you cannot tell whether a bug fix or an operating system update will arrive. We also found no shutdown notice on Serenade's home page or on its repository. Some aggregator sites list 2026 dates for Serenade, but we could not confirm them from Serenade's own pages, so we did not rely on them.
Our reading is that the software is available, its last visible development was in 2022, and its current status is unconfirmed. If you need a tool that someone is actively fixing, this is not enough evidence to choose it.
Serenade's home page promises natural speech, but its 2022 paper describes exact commands
The home page says that with Serenade you can write code using natural speech 4. A 2022 paper describes the product differently. It says Serenade requires that spoken commands precisely match the commands the system understands 5.
These two descriptions do not agree. The home page is marketing, and the paper describes how the product worked in 2022, so neither settles how it behaves on your machine today. The only reliable test is your own speech. Try a command in its exact phrasing, then a looser version, and see which one it understands.
Local processing and open code are the strongest reasons to test it
Serenade's home page says the app can run speech in the cloud or completely locally 6. A fully local setup keeps your voice commands and source code on the device, which matters if the code is private. The page does not say which option is the default, so check the settings before you use it on private code.
The same page describes the speech-to-code engine as open-source 7. Open code can be read and changed by anyone. In principle, others could keep building Serenade if the company stopped, but that does not mean anyone is doing so now. Our commit check found no recent work.
It depends: when Serenade is worth a test
| If you | Then |
|---|---|
| Want a free, local option and can test it this week | Install it on a spare machine and follow the steps below |
| Need a tool you can rely on for paid work, with updates and support | Choose a tool whose recent releases you can see, and compare the options in the guide to voice coding |
| Work in VS Code, Chrome or Hyper | Check that Serenade's plugin for your app works, since the setup walks you through installing plugins for supported applications such as these 8 |
How to test Serenade in an afternoon
- Install Serenade on a machine you can afford to test on, from its download page. Note the operating system version you tested on.
- After installation, add the plugin for your editor, as the app's setup walks you through.
- Dictate twenty short code commands and count how many it gets right the first time. Include some in the exact phrasing and some in a looser form, so you can see how strict it is.
- Check that the app still starts after your next operating system update. With no recent release visible, this is the risk to watch.
- After a week, decide. If it does not run, or does not recognize you reliably, use Talon or dictation into an AI coding tool instead.
For the other questions in this group, see how Talon voice coding works and whether typing speed matters in coding. The guide to voice coding puts Serenade next to Talon and dictation, and the overview of voice typing in apps covers the plain dictation side.
