Which dictation apps have the most App Store ratings?

General voice assistants have by far the most App Store ratings. On October 19, 2026, ChatGPT voice mode had 11,431,550 ratings ¹ on the United States App Store, followed by Amazon Alexa with 5,919,353 ratings ² and Gemini with 2,354,196 ratings ³. Tools built mainly for turning speech into text are far smaller. The most rated voice keyboard is Microsoft SwiftKey with 121,807 ratings ⁴, and the most rated dedicated dictation app is Wispr Flow with 17,618 ratings ⁵.

The figures come from Apple's lookup API across six storefronts: the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan and Brazil. The dataset holds 540 ⁶.

Voice assistants dominate the US ranking

The top of the US iPhone ranking is almost entirely general assistants. Their ratings come from huge installed bases, so a count here says little about how good an app is at dictation.

Chart 0 below shows the same ranking for the US App Store.

Grok has 1,519,656 ratings ¹⁴ and Microsoft Copilot has 1,360,110 ratings ¹⁵ in the same storefront. Claude voice mode has 281,465 ratings ¹⁶. All of these let you speak to an assistant, and some can turn speech into text, but they are not dictation tools in the sense of typing into any app.

Voice keyboards lead the typing-by-voice group

Voice keyboards sit inside the keyboard you already use, which is why SwiftKey and Gboard have tens of thousands of ratings. Gboard has 60,397 ratings in the US ¹⁷.

Gboard's average stars are lower than most apps in the dataset, and lowest in Japan, where it has 6,950 ratings ²³. A large count does not mean a well liked app.

Dedicated dictation and transcription apps have far fewer ratings

Wispr Flow is the most rated app in the "Dictation app" segment in our data. Meeting and transcription tools follow: Otter.ai has 85,529 ratings in the US ²⁴, Plaud has 23,677 ²⁵, and Riverside has 20,179 ²⁶.

Notta is rated mostly in Japan, where it has 27,200 ratings ³¹.

Other storefronts follow the same order, with big local differences

ChatGPT voice mode is the most rated app in every storefront we track. Its counts are 2,976,888 in Brazil ³² and 2,636,844 in Japan ³³. Amazon Alexa is much closer to it in the United Kingdom, with 1,180,470 ratings ³⁴.

How fast ratings grow

Chart 2 plots ratings over time for the US App Store. The dataset is read weekly, so each reading is one dated snapshot, not a continuous count.

A count can also fall. Apple can reset an app's ratings when a new version ships, so a drop does not always mean the app lost users.

What the numbers do and do not measure

• Ratings are not downloads. Only a fraction of users rate an app, and how often an app asks for a rating changes that fraction a lot.
• Ratings are not dictation quality. An assistant can have millions of ratings because people use it for many things besides dictation.
• Apple's API can lag. It can trail the store page by a day.
• Only listed apps count. Apps with no App Store or Mac App Store listing, including most Windows and web tools, are not in the data. Storefronts where an app has no ratings yet are left out too.
• Six storefronts only. Other countries are not covered.
• Older apps have a head start. Years of accumulated ratings favor older apps over new ones.

What this means when you choose how to dictate

Do not pick a dictation tool by its rating count. A count mostly reflects how many people have installed an app and been asked to rate it. Use it as a rough check that an app has a real user base, then compare what matters to you: accuracy in your language, where the app works, whether it runs on your device, and the average stars.

If you only need occasional dictation on a phone, the voice key on your built-in keyboard may be enough.
