How do you clean up dictated text with ChatGPT?
Dictate into ChatGPT with the microphone icon, then paste a fixed prompt above your transcript that asks only for filler removal, clear self-corrections and punctuation. Compare the reply with your raw words before you use it, since a chatbot can over-correct, and do not dictate confidential material into a chat you have not checked.

You clean up dictated text with ChatGPT in two stages. First you dictate with the microphone icon in the chat box, which turns your speech into text. Then you paste a fixed prompt above that text and ask for a light edit. The prompt is what keeps the edit small. Without it, a chatbot will often tidy your sentences as well as your fillers. The steps below use the prompt from our guide to AI cleanup for dictation, which asks for level 3 cleanup: removals and punctuation, no rewording.
Dictate with the microphone icon, not voice mode
In the ChatGPT desktop or mobile app, you start dictation by tapping the microphone icon in the text box, and your words then appear as text 1. Use Dictation rather than voice mode for this job. OpenAI's help article says to use ChatGPT Dictation when you want to record a prompt, review and edit its transcription, and then send it as text 2. You need that review step, because the text is where the cleanup happens.
- Open ChatGPT in the desktop app or the mobile app.
- Tap the microphone icon in the text box, and speak your draft. Your words appear as text in the box.
- Read the transcript in the box and edit any word the recognizer got wrong, since the cleanup pass works on what it is given.
- Paste the prompt above the transcript and send it.
The menu and button names can change with app updates, so check the screen you are looking at if a step does not match.
Use a prompt that asks for minimal edits
The prompt does the work. Each instruction removes something or adds punctuation, and none asks the model to rephrase. Paste it as written, then add your transcript after it:
Clean up the dictated transcript below. Remove filler words such as um, uh, you know and like, and remove false starts. When I correct myself out loud, such as with "no" or "scratch that", keep only the corrected words. Add punctuation and paragraph breaks. Do not add, remove or reword anything else. Keep every number, name, date, negative and hedge, such as "probably" or "I think". If you are unsure whether a word is a filler or a correction, leave it in. Return only the cleaned text.
The prompt tells the model to leave doubtful words in place, because a cleanup that guesses is the one that changes meaning. This matters with chatbots in particular. A 2023 evaluation of ChatGPT as a grammar corrector found that its very fluent corrections were possibly due to over-correction and not following the principle of minimal edits 3. The prompt asks for the opposite behavior, and you still have to check the result.
If you want a fuller rewrite of a first draft, you can ask for it in a separate step. Keep that output apart from the record you may need later.
Check the reply against your raw words
Compare the reply with your raw transcript before you use it. Check every number, name, date and time, then every negative ("not", "never", "don't") and every hedge ("probably", "may", "I think"). Those words carry the meaning. Look for sentences you do not recognize, because those are additions. If a change looks wrong, paste the raw text again and ask only for the fix you want.
The question on whether AI dictation changes what you said explains which changes to watch for, and why the level you ask for matters more than the tool.
Know where the audio goes before you dictate
Cleaning up in ChatGPT means sending your words to a cloud service, and that comes with two facts you should know. First, when you press the microphone icon, OpenAI says the recorded audio is sent to its models to be transcribed 4. You can review and edit the text before you send it, which is what OpenAI's help article recommends 2. Second, OpenAI says audio from ChatGPT dictation is kept for as long as the chat stays in your chat history 5.
Do not dictate confidential material into a cloud chat you have not checked. If the audio itself is the concern, a dictation tool that runs on your computer keeps the speech there. The guide to speech to text without AI covers the route that skips the language model, and the question on whether AI dictation apps send text to the cloud covers the trade-offs.
Compare ChatGPT with dictation apps that have cleanup built in
ChatGPT is one option. Other apps offer cleanup as a built-in step, and each makes different trade-offs about where the audio goes and how much it edits. For a comparison of the apps, see AI dictation apps compared. For what the cleanup costs in subscriptions and processing, see AI dictation cost. For the wider set of ways to dictate into chatbots, see the guide to dictation in ChatGPT and Claude.
If you run the prompt often, the term for what it is doing is an AI prompt: a fixed instruction that shapes the model's output. Keep a copy of the prompt you trust, and change it only when your tests show a problem.
