Question · Voice and AI
Does AI cleanup make your writing sound generic?
It can. Cleanup that keeps your own sentences changes little, but when a model rewrites or supplies wording, the text drifts toward the model's habits and the range of wording narrows. Keep your hedges, opinions and sentence length, and reread the sentences the model wrote.

Yes, AI cleanup can make your writing sound generic, and the risk rises with how much the model writes. A light pass that removes fillers and adds punctuation leaves your sentences in place, so your voice survives. A heavy pass replaces your sentences with the model's, and the model's habits come with them. The research on co-writing with language models shows the effect on the group of writers as well as on the individual text. Our guide to AI cleanup for dictation describes the five levels, and the lower levels are the ones that protect your voice.
Model-written text narrows the range of writing
The clearest evidence comes from a controlled experiment on argumentative essays. Participants wrote in three setups, with a base model (GPT3), with a feedback-tuned model (InstructGPT), and without model help. Writing with InstructGPT, but not with GPT3, produced a statistically significant reduction in diversity 1. The essays were more similar to one another and had less lexical and content variety. The authors traced the effect to the model's contributions: the drop came mainly from InstructGPT's text in the co-written essays, while the text the participants wrote themselves was not affected 2.
That finding matters for cleanup because a cleanup pass that rewrites is exactly a model contributing text to your draft. The study used 2023 models and essays, so the size of the effect in your own writing is an open question. The direction is clear, though, and it points at the words the model supplies rather than the ones you wrote.
Models also leave a trace on the vocabulary of text they touch. An analysis of PubMed abstracts suggests that at least 13.5 percent of 2024 abstracts were processed with LLMs 3. The estimate comes from a shift in certain style words after LLMs appeared, not from a count of tools used, so read it as a sign of common wording rather than proof of any single edit.
Generic and good can rise together
Generative AI is not simply a flattening tool. In a 2024 experiment on short stories, access to generative AI ideas made the stories rated as more creative, better written and more enjoyable, with the largest gains among less creative writers 4. The same study found that stories written with generative AI ideas were more similar to one another than stories written by humans alone 5.
The two results describe a trade-off. Each writer may gain, while the range of what gets written narrows. For you, that means a cleanup can make one draft read better and still add to a shared sameness, especially when many people use the same tool with the same prompt. The question for your own writing is whether the sentences still sound like you.
Opinions can move with the suggestions
Cleanup can also affect what you say, not only how you say it. In one 2023 experiment on co-writing with an opinionated language model, the model's suggestions affected the opinions expressed in people's writing, and they shifted participants' opinions in a later attitude survey 6. A cleanup pass that softens a strong claim, or that adds a balancing clause, can change your position without your noticing. The question on whether AI dictation changes what you said covers the same risk for meaning.
Models also change how the writing sounds. A 2026 preprint found that LLMs not only alter the voice and tone of human writing but also consistently alter its intended meaning 7. A change of tone is easy to miss, because each sentence still looks correct on its own.
It depends on the level, the text and the writer
The effect is not the same for every kind of writing.
- Light cleanup that removes fillers and adds punctuation changes little of your voice, because the sentences are still yours.
- Edited or rewritten output changes phrasing, rhythm and emphasis, and that is where a recognizable voice gets lost.
- Short factual notes, such as a list of tasks or a meeting summary, lose little if the model changes a few words. Personal essays, opinion pieces and creative writing lose the most.
- Writers who want help with grammar may accept a more uniform style, which is a fair trade if the writing is meant to be plain. The loss matters when the voice is the point.
What to do to keep your voice
- Pick the lightest level that gives readable text. For most dictation, that is removing fillers and adding punctuation, with no rewording.
- Ask the model not to change phrasing. The prompt in how to clean up dictation with ChatGPT asks for exactly that, and it keeps your hedges and numbers.
- Keep the features that make your writing yours. Hedges, opinions, sentence length and your own idioms should survive the edit. If a cleanup removes them, put them back.
- Reread the sentences the model wrote. Give most of your attention to adjectives, to the first and last sentence of each paragraph, and to any sentence you do not recognize as your own.
- Write the key opinion yourself. If a point is central to your argument, draft that sentence by hand after the cleanup, so the claim is in your words.
