Question · Voice and AI
Can ChatGPT summarize a voice memo?
Yes, if you have a paid ChatGPT plan and the recording is within the 512 MB upload limit. ChatGPT can condense the audio into a summary, but a summary can leave out points you made, so check it against the transcript before you act on it.

Yes, on a paid plan. ChatGPT offers audio uploads on paid subscriptions and workspaces, including Enterprise 1, and each audio file can be up to 512 MB 2. Attach the recording, ask for a summary in the same message, and then check the result against what you said. The model condenses the speech it hears, and a condensed version can drop a point that was said once.
Upload the recording and ask for one job
Attach the audio file in a new chat and say exactly what you want back. Ask for one job at a time. A request for "the notes" lets the model decide what matters to you, so name the form of the output and the rules it must follow:
Summarize this recording in five bullet points, in the order the speaker raised them. Use only what the speaker said. Write any name, date or number exactly as spoken, and mark anything unclear as [unclear].
The rule against adding content does not stop the model from making mistakes. It only tells the model what you expect, so the check after the summary is still needed.
The 512 MB limit and the paid plan are the two checks to make first
Two things decide whether the upload works at all. Audio uploads are listed for paid subscriptions and workspaces, so check that your plan is one of them. The file must also be 512 MB or smaller 2. A larger file has to be trimmed or split before you upload.
Long recordings can time out, so split them at natural breaks
OpenAI says that processing of long audio uploads is best-effort, and that very long recordings may time out 3. Because processing is best-effort, a one-hour recording carries more risk than a five-minute note. Split a long recording at natural pauses, such as the change of topic or a long silence, and summarize each part on its own. Combining several part summaries into one more summary adds another rewrite, so keep the part summaries as the record you check against.
A summary can drop points, so compare it with the audio
A summary is a rewrite, and the most common error in a rewrite of recorded speech is the missing point. In a UC Davis pilot of AI clinical notes made from recorded visits, accidental omissions were the most frequent error, found in 18 percent of the 356 reviewed notes 4. Those are clinical notes, not voice memos, so use the figure as a reason to check, not as a rate for your own recordings.
Check the summary for three things: every decision and date, every name and number, and every task. If the summary cannot be traced to the transcript, delete the line. For a full treatment of this risk, see are AI summaries of voice recordings accurate.
When ChatGPT is not the right tool
Four cases call for something else:
- Your plan is not a paid one. Audio uploads are listed for paid subscriptions and workspaces, so make a transcript with another app and paste the text into the chat. The summary step then runs on text, and the same checks apply.
- You need the words, not a summary. A chat model may condense or reword what it hears. For a copy of the speech, read can ChatGPT transcribe audio files and ask for a word-for-word transcript instead.
- The recording is private. An upload sends the audio to a cloud service. Read the guide to whether voice-to-text is safe before you upload anything sensitive.
- You want a summary without a cloud upload. Some phones and computers now summarize a recording on their own. See can your phone summarize a voice recording.
What to do
- Confirm that you have a paid plan and that the file is 512 MB or smaller.
- Split a long recording at natural breaks, and upload each part.
- Ask for the five-point summary above, in the order the speaker raised the points.
- Read the summary with the transcript open. Delete anything you cannot find in the transcript.
- Save the transcript and the checked summary together.
