What MacWhisper does, and what you can use on Windows.
MacWhisper is two things: a file transcriber and, on a Mac, a dictation tool. On Windows, this free page covers the first, and Yap for Windows covers the second.

What carries over
The part people choose MacWhisper for: it stays on your computer.
MacWhisper says it plainly: “All transcription is done on your device, no data leaves your machine.” Most free transcription websites do the opposite and upload your file. This page keeps the private part, without an install.
Nothing uploaded.
The file and its transcript stay in this tab. There is no account and no copy kept by us, so interviews and meetings stay yours.
Text and subtitles.
Edit the transcript, copy it or save a .txt file, and save .srt or .vtt subtitles with real start and end times.
Dictation too, with Yap.
For speaking into Word, email or a chat: hold Ctrl + Win, talk, release, and the text is typed where your cursor is.
Questions.
- Is there a MacWhisper for Windows?
- No. MacWhisper is made by Good Snooze (Jordi Bruin and friends, the Netherlands) for Mac, iPhone and iPad, and its official site offers no Windows version (checked Oct 15, 2026). Be careful with sites offering a Windows download under its name; its maker warns: “Please be aware of other websites pretending to be MacWhisper.”
- Is this the same Whisper MacWhisper uses?
- Both use Whisper, OpenAI’s open speech recognition model. MacWhisper can run large Whisper models on a Mac. This page runs a small Whisper model (about 80 MB, or about 165 MB where your browser uses the graphics chip) that fits in a browser tab, so it makes more mistakes with names, noisy rooms, music and people talking over each other.
- Is my file uploaded?
- No. The file is read and transcribed inside this browser tab, on your PC. The audio and the transcript are not sent to a server or saved by us. The site records usage events, such as that a transcription finished, never the file, its name or its words.
- Can I make subtitles?
- Yes. The file is cut at natural pauses into parts of a few seconds, and each part becomes a subtitle with its real start and end time. Save them as an .srt or .vtt file for YouTube, video editors and players.
- Does it tell speakers apart?
- No. MacWhisper Pro adds automatic speaker recognition on a Mac; this page gives one running transcript.
- How long can a file be?
- Up to 60 minutes and 300 MB per file. Split a longer recording into parts and transcribe them one by one. Chrome and Edge read the most formats and, where they can use the graphics chip, transcribe an hour in a few minutes.
- Can I dictate into Word or any other app on Windows?
- Not with this page, which transcribes files. Yap for Windows does that: hold Ctrl + Win in any app, speak, release, and the words are typed where your cursor is, recognized on your PC. Windows’ own voice typing (Windows + H) is free too, and uses Microsoft’s online speech service.
More for Windows.
- The same transcriber on its own page: free audio to text, with subtitles.
- Speak instead of upload: free online dictation in the browser.
- Built into Windows: how to dictate on Windows 11 and 10.
- On an Arm PC: dictation on Windows on Arm.
