Voice Assistants vs Dictation: Siri, Alexa, Gemini
A voice assistant works out what you mean and does something, such as setting a timer or sending a short message. Dictation writes down what you say as text, which makes it the better tool for long writing, because assistants stop listening when they decide you have finished.

Use a voice assistant for actions and quick answers, and use dictation for anything long, exact or that you will send or keep. An assistant such as Siri, Alexa+ or Gemini interprets a request and carries out a task. Dictation records your words and types them into the text field you are using. Both begin with speech recognition, but they do different jobs with the result, and that difference explains most of what you will notice when you use them.
Assistants are not built to take dictation. They are built to answer a request, so they decide when the request is complete and then act on it. A dictated letter has no such moment, and an assistant that stops early loses the rest of it. The sections below show where each tool fits, what the vendors document for Siri, Alexa+, Gemini and ChatGPT voice, and why long speech goes wrong with an assistant. Our guide to speech to text AI covers the wider subject.
Assistants act on your intent, dictation records your words
A voice assistant starts when it hears a wake word such as "Hey Siri" or "Alexa", or when you press a button. It turns your speech into text, decides when you have finished, and then works out what you want. The last step is called intent recognition: the assistant maps your words to an action, such as a timer, a call or a search.
The decision about when you have finished is made by an endpointer. In a 2023 study of voice assistants and dictation by Colin Lea and colleagues, the authors describe an endpointer as a model that detects whether the user has finished speaking 1. The endpointer runs while you are still speaking, so an assistant is always guessing whether a pause means you are done. Engineers call the same decision turn detection, and you will see that term in developer documentation.
Dictation works differently. The same study describes a typical dictation design in which the user starts and stops with a button 2. You begin with a key or a button, speak, and end the session yourself. The end of the text is your decision, not a guess by the software.
Dictation is also fast for short messages. In a controlled study on an iPhone, English text entered by speech reached 153 words per minute, against 52 words per minute on the built-in keyboard 3.
| Question | Voice assistant | Dictation |
|---|---|---|
| What it is built for | Requests, short answers and conversation | Turning your speech into text |
| What you get back | An action, an answer or a short message | Your words, in the text field you are using |
| How it starts | A wake word or a button | A key, a button or a shortcut |
| How it ends | Its own endpointer decides you are done | You end it, or silence stops it, depending on the app |
| Long text | A poor fit, because it can stop early | A good fit, as long as you keep it running |
In practice the difference shows in the first few words you say. Ask an assistant to set a timer and it sets the timer and stops listening. Dictate the same words and you get them typed out, which is what you want for a note but not for a timer. Neither mode does the other's job well, which is why the choice matters.
The rest of this guide explains each row. For the speed side of the choice, see the guide to dictation versus typing.
Assistants have become language-model chatbots, and their makers say so
The big assistants were built to match commands to actions. Their makers now describe them as conversational systems built on large language models that can write, summarize and hold a conversation. The change shows in what the vendors say about their own products.
Google is the clearest case on phones. In a March 2025 post, Google said the classic Google Assistant would stop being accessible on most mobile devices later that year 4. The post was about upgrading Assistant users to Gemini.
Apple's route runs through Google's models. In a joint statement, Apple and Google said that the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology 5. The same statement says those models will help power a more personalized Siri 6. The statement is about the models behind Apple Intelligence. It does not say that the Gemini app is the new Siri, and our question on whether the new Siri is powered by Google Gemini goes through what it does and does not say.
Apple's Mac Help refers to the new capabilities as Siri AI (Beta) 7. Apple says that Siri gains personal context understanding, onscreen awareness and broad world knowledge with Siri AI 8.
Amazon made the same move with Alexa+, which it describes as a personal AI assistant that gets things done 9. The question on what Alexa+ can do lists the features Amazon documents.
OpenAI keeps two voice features apart. It says to use ChatGPT Voice for a live conversation 10, and it treats text you will send as a separate job, covered below.
The chatbot shift matters for dictation for one reason. A system that generates text can change the words it writes down, so you have to check what it gives back. The guide to AI dictation explains how that works, and speech to text and LLMs covers the models underneath.
Siri, Alexa+, Gemini and ChatGPT voice compared
We did not find an independent test that ranks these four assistants on the same tasks, so there is no reliable "smartest" answer. Which is the smartest AI voice assistant? explains how to choose by task instead. The table shows what each vendor documents and how each handles long dictation.
| Assistant | Where it runs | What its maker documents | Long text by voice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siri on Mac | Macs, with Siri AI in beta | Personal context and onscreen awareness 8 | Use Dictation, which has no timeout for length 11 |
| Alexa+ | Alexa devices and the web at alexa.com | Document help and calendar entries 12 | We found no Amazon page describing a long-dictation mode |
| Gemini on phones | Phones moving from Google Assistant to Gemini 4 | The Gemini app as the phone assistant | Not covered by the pages we checked, so test it before you rely on it |
| ChatGPT Voice | The ChatGPT apps | A live, back-and-forth conversation 10 | Transcripts are not verbatim 13, so use dictation for text you will send |
Siri handles everyday jobs on a Mac. Apple's Mac Help lists reading and writing text messages and emails among the things you can ask Siri to do 14. Apple says Apple Intelligence can also work with ChatGPT from OpenAI, when you allow it, to help you get things done 15. Apple's Dictation feature is a separate tool, and it is the one to use for writing. Apple also says Apple Intelligence will keep running on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute under the deal 16. The guide to dictation versus voice control and Siri on a Mac explains how to tell the three apart.
Amazon lists Alexa+ at $19.99 per month, and all Prime members get it for free 17. On the web, Amazon says Alexa+ is available in a browser at alexa.com 18. These are task features, and they show what Alexa+ is built to do. They do not describe a mode for writing long text by voice. The question on what Alexa+ is and what it can do covers the details.
Gemini is taking over from Google Assistant on phones. A September 2026 check by 9to5Google found Google Assistant gone on every device and account it looked at in the US and Europe 19. That is a press check of a limited set of accounts, not a statement from Google. The pages we checked did not document a long-dictation mode for Gemini, so the table marks it as untested. Check it on your own phone before you rely on it for long text. Gemini is a conversation tool first, so the same rule applies: use it to talk a problem through, and use dictation for the text you will keep. The guide to Google Assistant voice commands covers the command side of the Google assistant.
ChatGPT Voice is a conversation feature. Dictation is the feature for text you will send. In ChatGPT, the microphone icon sends your recording to OpenAI's models for transcription, and the text comes back for you to edit 20.
Assistants are poor at long text because they decide when you are done
An assistant stops when its endpointer decides you have finished, so a long passage with natural pauses is the hardest case for it. In the 2023 study, 61 percent of the people who stutter and were familiar with voice assistants named being cut off before they finished talking as a reason they used them less 21. The same study measured the effect directly. The baseline endpointer cut off an average of 23.8 percent of utterances from those participants 22. The participants were people who stutter, so these rates describe them, not every speaker, but the mechanism is the one that matters for any long passage.
Other designs use silence in the same way. OpenAI's Realtime API, a developer interface, uses periods of silence to split audio into turns 23. Microsoft says a Copilot voice chat ends automatically after one minute of inactivity 24. A session that ends on a timer is not a place to compose a long document.
Dictation is built the other way round. The 2023 study notes that many dictation systems do not use an automatic endpointer, which is why people who stutter were cut off less often in dictation 25. Apple's Mac Dictation shows the design clearly. On a Mac, you can dictate text of any length without a timeout 11. It stops when it detects no speech for 30 seconds 26, so a short pause while you think is fine. On macOS 27, you finish by pressing the Escape key, the Microphone key (if your Mac has one) or the Dictation shortcut 27. Apple's Dictation guide covers the steps.
Dictation also helps you check its own output. Apple's guide says that ambiguous text is underlined in blue, and that you can click the underlined word and choose an alternative 28. For example, dictation may return "flour" when you meant "flower", and the underline shows you where to look. An assistant that has already acted on your words gives you no such check.
The transcript is also a different thing from your words. ChatGPT Voice transcripts are not verbatim records 13. That is acceptable for a conversation and risky for a letter, a contract or a clinical note, where every word matters.
Recognition errors add to the cut-offs
Cut-offs are only one failure. The recognizer also gets words wrong, and the errors are not spread evenly. In the 2020 study by Allison Koenecke and colleagues, the average word error rate across five commercial speech recognition systems was 0.35 for Black speakers and 0.19 for white speakers 29. The study found that the error rates for Black speakers were nearly twice as large in every case 30.
The text gives exact figures for two of the systems, and the chart sets them beside the average. In the study, Microsoft's system had a word error rate of 0.27 for Black speakers and 0.15 for white speakers 31. Apple's system had a word error rate of 0.45 for Black speakers and 0.23 for white speakers 32.
These are results for the systems as they were tested in the study, so the chart is a snapshot, not a current ranking. Recognition errors also combine with false starts. In a 2020 study of smart speakers exposed to television audio, a Google Home Mini playing The West Wing averaged 0.95 activations per hour without the wake word 33. Each false wake is a session you did not start. The question on why voice assistants misunderstand you covers the causes in more detail, and the glossary entry on voice activity detection explains how software decides that someone is speaking.
The practical rule follows. If the assistant mishears a long passage, you may spend more time repairing it than you saved by speaking it. Newer voice agents combine these parts into a single product, and the guide to AI voice agents explains where they tend to fail. The question on whether assistants can take long dictation gives the detailed answer for each one.
Use an assistant for actions and answers, dictation for anything you will send or keep
Choose by what happens at the end. If the task ends with an action or a short answer, use an assistant. If it ends with words that someone else will read, or that you will keep, use dictation.
| Job | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Set a timer or call someone | Assistant | The task ends in an action |
| Ask a quick factual question | Assistant | The answer is short |
| Draft an email or a document | Dictation | The words are the product |
| Take meeting or lecture notes | Dictation | A long passage needs a session that does not end on its own |
| Talk an idea through | ChatGPT Voice | It is a conversation |
| Dictate a prompt you will review | ChatGPT Dictation | You edit the text before you send it |
The numbered rules below explain the reasoning in each case.
- Use an assistant for actions. Calling a contact, setting a timer and reading a message are the jobs assistants are built for. Siri's Mac requests include reading and writing text messages and emails 14.
- Use Voice to talk something through. OpenAI describes ChatGPT Voice as a live, back-and-forth conversation 10, which suits thinking out loud rather than drafting.
- Use dictation for long text. On a Mac, open Dictation from the keyboard settings and dictate your letter, notes or report. There is no timeout for length 11, so you can keep going past the point where an assistant would stop.
- Keep pauses short. Mac Dictation stops when it detects no speech for 30 seconds 26, so keep any pause shorter than that, or press the shortcut to finish on purpose.
- Read the text before you send it. Dictated text is a draft. In ChatGPT, the microphone icon returns text that you can edit before you send it 20, and you should check the text from any dictation tool the same way.
- Treat a voice transcript as a draft, not a record. Voice transcripts may not exactly match what was said 13, so compare any formal text against what you meant.
Test before you commit. Take a page of your own writing, dictate it with the assistant and then with dictation in the app where you will work, and count the words each one gets wrong. Count the times the assistant stopped you mid-thought, too. That test shows more about your speech and your apps than any comparison table.
Apple's built-in Dictation on a Mac may be enough for most people. The guide to using Dictation on a Mac covers the setup. If you want dictation that works in any app on a Mac or Windows PC, Yap, which we make, is an on-device dictation app for both. See the download page for the current versions.
If you want dictation that only writes down what you said, without an AI rewrite, speech to text without AI explains the options.
Before you dictate private material, check what each service keeps and who can review it. The guide on human review of voice recordings covers what to look for.

Questions about this
- Can Siri, Alexa or Gemini take long dictation? Not reliably. Assistants stop listening when they decide you have finished, and the pages we checked describe no long-dictation mode for Alexa+ or Gemini. On a Mac, use Dictation instead of Siri, because Apple says Dictation has no timeout for length.
- Is the new Siri powered by Google Gemini?Partly. In January 2026 Apple and Google said Apple's next-generation foundation models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology, and that they will help power a more personalized Siri. The statement does not say the Gemini app is the new Siri, and where the features run is still unsettled.
- What is Alexa+ and what can it do?Alexa+ is Amazon's next generation of Alexa, a generative-AI assistant that handles tasks such as your to-do list, family calendar and smart home, not only short answers and timers. It is free with Amazon Prime, or costs $19.99 a month without Prime.
- What is the best voice commands assistant app?The best voice commands assistant app is the one built into the device you use most, set up for the commands you give most often. We did not find an independent test that ranks Siri, Gemini, Alexa+ or Home Assistant on the same commands, so no reliable source we read names one overall winner.
- Which is the smartest AI voice assistant? No independent test has ranked Siri, Alexa+ and Gemini on the same tasks, so no reliable source names one as the smartest. Choose by the job: Alexa+ for household tasks and the smart home, Siri for Apple devices, and Gemini for conversation on Android.
- Why do voice assistants misunderstand you?A voice assistant misunderstands you when the recognizer gets the wrong words from the audio, or when it reads the words correctly but acts on the wrong meaning or stops before you finish. Background noise, distance, accents, unusual pronunciation and pauses are the main causes. You can check and reduce noise and distance yourself.
