Which Google Assistant features does Gemini not support?
Google does not publish a complete list, and says some familiar Assistant features may not be supported in Gemini. The gaps Google named at Gemini's February 2024 launch were reminders and tasks, podcasts, news and radio, and third-party music, and Google added voice-started routines in August 2024. We could not confirm from Google's 2026 pages which of these gaps are closed, so test the commands you use before you switch.

Google does not publish a full list, so no single page answers this. Google's own statement is general: some familiar Assistant features may not be supported in Gemini yet 1. The best-documented gaps come from Gemini's launch on Android in February 2024. Reminders, podcasts and radio, and some music services were the main ones. We could not confirm from 2026 pages whether those gaps have closed, so the reliable answer is to test the commands you actually use.
The gaps Google named at launch
At launch, Google said that to set reminders and tasks you had to switch back to Google Assistant 2. That means reminders were a gap on Gemini's first version. The Google help pages we read in 2026 do not say whether reminders now work in Gemini on phones.
Media was the other clear gap. Google said podcasts, news and radio stations, and third-party music providers were not supported in Gemini at launch 3. If you rely on one of those services, test it, because the 2026 Gemini help page we read does not repeat the list.
Routines work differently. In August 2024, Gemini on Android began running Routines when you say "start" and the routine name, though typed triggers did not work 4. Google's 2026 page still says that some starters and actions are not supported when you use a routine with Gemini, and that Gemini tells you when an action is not supported 5.
What Gemini does handle
Gemini did not lose everything. Google listed alarms and timers, phone calls, and sending and reading messages among the Assistant actions Gemini could perform at launch 6. Those actions were listed at launch in 2024, so check each one on your phone.
The table below sets the known gaps against the status Google describes.
| Feature | Assistant example | Status in Gemini as documented |
|---|---|---|
| Reminders and tasks | "Remind me to call Mom every Sunday." | Needed a switch back to Assistant at launch in 2024. No 2026 phone page we read confirms a change |
| Podcasts, news and radio | "Play the latest episode from This American Life." | Not supported at launch in 2024. Test before you rely on it |
| Routines | A routine you start by voice | Started by voice since August 2024. Some starters and actions are still unsupported |
| Alarms and timers | "Set an alarm for 7 a.m." | Listed as a quick voice action at launch |
It depends: the device and the device's own assistant
The gaps apply to the phone's Gemini, not to every device you own. Google says Assistant keeps responding to "Hey Google" on locked devices that are not phones, including cars, TVs, smart displays and smart speakers 7. Gemini for Home can replace it on speakers and displays, so check which assistant your speaker uses. If a command fails on your phone, try it on the device that has Assistant before you assume it is gone.
Language matters too. Google says Hey Google and some quick voice actions with Gemini are not available in 14 languages, including Greek, Hebrew and Ukrainian 8. A command that works in English may not work in those languages.
What to do
- List your commands. Write down the Assistant commands you use each week, grouped by reminders, routines, media and calls.
- Test each one on Gemini. Run every command once and note whether it works, fails, or gets an answer that says it is not supported. For a routine, Gemini tells you when an action is not supported, so that message is the answer.
- Keep Assistant for the gaps. If a command fails and you need it, switch back while the option still exists, or use an Assistant device for that job. The question on switching back explains when that is still possible.
- Check the wake phrase. After any switch, set up Hey Google again on the assistant that is primary. The steps are in the question on how to turn on Hey Google.
For the commands by category, read the guide to Google Assistant voice commands. For the big question of whether the switch is happening at all, see the question on whether Gemini is replacing Google Assistant. The wider comparison of assistants and dictation is in our overview of voice assistants and dictation, and the voice assistant entry defines the term.
