What is Dragon Legal, and is it still sold?
Dragon Legal is Nuance's version of its Dragon speech recognition software, with a legal vocabulary for client and case documentation. It is still sold: Nuance's US store lists Dragon Legal and Dragon Legal Anywhere, and a US reseller lists the cloud subscription at 780 dollars per year. Confirm the current price and any end-of-sale date with Nuance before you sign a contract.

Dragon Legal is a legal edition of Dragon, the speech recognition software from Nuance. It types as you speak, and it comes with vocabulary for legal work. Nuance still lists it in its US store, and the cloud version, Dragon Legal Anywhere, is sold by subscription. Our guide to legal dictation software compares it with the other options for lawyers.
Dragon Legal adds a legal vocabulary to Dragon's live dictation
Dragon Legal is a live dictation tool. It turns speech into text in the document you are writing, which is the workflow the front-end speech recognition entry describes. The difference from the general edition is the vocabulary. Nuance's training guide says Dragon Legal Group is built with a specialized legal vocabulary for client and case documentation 1.
The reseller page for Dragon Legal Anywhere adds that the vocabulary enables automatic formatting of legal citations 2. We could not test that claim. Check it on a page of your own citations before you rely on it. The symbol and citation routes are covered in how to dictate legal citations.
A legal vocabulary does not stop recognition errors. It reduces them for the terms it was built for. Names, matter numbers and firm-specific terms still need custom vocabulary entries, and the Dragon NaturallySpeaking entry explains the product family.
Both legal editions are still listed, and the cloud one is a subscription
Nuance's US store menu lists Dragon Legal, Dragon Law Enforcement, Dragon Professional Anywhere and Dragon Legal Anywhere as products 3. That is the strongest evidence we found that both legal editions are still on sale, because it comes from the vendor. It does not give prices, and it does not say how long each edition will be offered.
Dragon Legal Anywhere is the subscription edition. A US reseller lists it at 65 dollars per month 4 or 780 dollars per year, each on a one-year term 5. Twelve monthly payments of 65 dollars come to 780 dollars 6. At list price, the annual plan saves nothing over the monthly one.
Prices come from resellers, and resellers change them. Ask Nuance for the current price and for the support period before you sign a multi-year contract. We did not find an end-of-sale date for either Anywhere subscription in the pages we read, and we could not confirm one from Nuance.
Check the platform before you buy
Most of the cost is in the platform, not the price. Three limits matter more than the subscription fee.
- Desktop Dragon lists Windows only. Nuance lists Windows 11 (64-bit), Windows 10 (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 as supported systems for Dragon Professional 16, its desktop release 7. We did not check whether Dragon Legal uses the same list, so confirm it for the version you buy. A Mac office should not expect that desktop release to run.
- Mac support has ended for the old product. Nuance said it would stop updates for Dragon Professional Individual for Mac after 22 October 2018, according to a 2018 report that quotes the notice 8. We did not verify Mac support for Dragon Legal Anywhere in 2026. Test it on your own Mac before you pay.
- The subscription is an ongoing cost. A cloud edition is paid for while you use it, so budget for it each year rather than as a one-time purchase.
When Dragon Legal is the right choice, and when it is not
Dragon Legal fits a lawyer who drafts alone on Windows, dictates long documents, and needs the legal vocabulary. A firm with a typist, or with a Mac-only office, should compare the other routes first. The question on how legal dictation works with an assistant covers recorded dictation, and the question on whether lawyers still dictate compares the two workflows.
Test before you buy. Dictate the same page with the same citations in two tools, count the errors, and check where each tool sends the audio. Our guide to legal dictation software has the confidentiality checks to run first.
